Hi there,

My parents have recently come a across a virus/spyware that I am unable to remove from their computer. When internet explorer is running the CPU usage it at 100% and several unknown processes appear including many (up to 10) titled iexplore.exe. In Safe Mode I have updated and run their AV software. I also downloaded Super AntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, and CCleaner. They picked up a few things but the problem still occurs. I also installed HJT and will post the results below. Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!

When Internet Explorer spawns many iexplore.exe processes and drives CPU to 100%, the usual causes are code injected into IE (malicious BHOs/toolbars), rogue copies of iexplore.exe running from non-standard folders, or a stealthy rootkit. HijackThis output is a start but is often not enough to locate a running component. ’s suggestion to collect fuller diagnostics is on target; volunteers such as @Judy and @crunchie will typically want a few additional logs and live-process details before recommending a removal routine.

Recommended triage (in order):

  1. Capture the live process picture so the executable path and PID are known. Sysinternals Process Explorer is ideal; alternatively run:
    tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq iexplore.exe" /V
    netstat -ano | findstr ESTABLISHED
  2. Confirm each iexplore.exe’s file path and digital publisher in Process Explorer. Any instance not running from the official Internet Explorer program folder is a strong indicator of compromise.
  3. Inspect autoruns/add-ons (Autoruns or IE Manage Add-ons) and disable unknown BHOs/toolbars. Do not delete items blindly; note their full path and publisher first.
  4. Check the hosts file and restore it to the Windows default if extra entries are present:
    notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  5. Run a rootkit and anti-malware scan with up-to-date tools (Malwarebytes plus a dedicated rootkit scanner such as TDSSKiller). Perform these scans from Safe Mode or from a clean rescue USB if the system resists cleaning.

If a rootkit or persistent launcher is found, back up personal files (from a clean environment), wipe and reinstall Windows — that is the only guaranteed cure for deeply entrenched infections. Change passwords from a clean device afterward, and consider replacing or upgrading the OS if it can no longer receive security updates. When posting follow-up diagnostics for the helpers mentioned above, include current Process Explorer properties for each iexplore.exe, an Autoruns log, and the full anti-malware scan logs.

Hi there...

Hi mak6152,

HijackThis really doesn't tell us much these days. We would prefer you try the steps in the linky below and post the logs:

http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/viruses-spyware-and-other-nasties/threads/134865

--- ALSO, post the scanlogs from the tools you have already run on your own.

One thing HJT does tell us is that the hosts file has been altered so google and bing redirect to a server in Romania...

Anyhoo, please post the requested logs. I or another volunteer will check back as time permits. Most likely it will be Judy or crunchie as I am backlogged with a lot of work this time of year.

Cheers :)
PP
