I am unable to use the Internet Explorer 6 Address Bar to perform single word seaches. This started after updating NetZero to version 7.0. It highjacked the address bar and all other search functions initially but by following the instructions on their website to delete NetZero Search Enhancer I was able to restore most other search functions. I have deleted NetZero altogether as well but without effect.

When I type multiple words in the address bar it seaches normally. If I type a single word it either does nothing or tries to dial-up a modem connection even though I am on a DSL connection. Typing the same word in a search engine or on another computer results in a normal search. If I type "go", "find", or "?" before the word produces a normal search.

I have followed several suggestions on this forum such as "reinstalling" Internet Explorer 6 and installing a "search.reg" file but to no effect.

I am using XP SP1. Here is my HJT logfile:

I hope you can help as I am just about ready to format my hard drive. By the way is there any way to create a new partition to migrate my data to prior to formating the drive?

I think it is normal for a single word not to search as my own computer does the same. So I guess the appropriate question now is if anybody elses internet explorer does the same. If other peoples Internet Explorer won't search with just one word (just like mine) then you will find its the way Internet Explorer is meant to be.

My IE6 does single word searches on the net quite happily. It invokes the msn engine http://search.live.com - that has to be something native to IE... ie built into one of the dlls it uses. Because the microsoft search engine has been updated, the dll containing that info is probably in one of the windows updates.
I could easily be talking through my hat here.

And also to a long gone OP :D.

ARRRRGHHH... I unny noticed the time on the second post. Geez, now I've bin caught too by ppl digging up ancient history.
Hang on, no I wasn't.. I was err.. replying to the respondent above. Yeah.
