Well, Linux installs, as far as I'm aware, aren't capable of residing on partitions that have a native Solaris disk layout, or FAT32 disk layout. I could be wrong on this though.

Linux usually uses ext2, ext3, ext4 for /boot and other file systems mounted at boot time.

If you have a Linux install disk, or install over a network, you will be prompted to setup the disk partition layout either through some visual GUI utility or text based fdisk.
