Ok, so I bought an S-video cable thinking I'd just plug it rignt into my mac and the other end to my nifty new flatscreen TV and vwalla!! It didn't work that way. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Do I need to change some display options on my MAC?

if you have a mac like mine and depending on you budget you might consider...
Canopus ADVC110 or cheaper device could add more options to your high tech life... ixlr8 :')
