Hi,

I've just had my Mac for a month now and I'm trying out all these iLife programs.
Also, I've been making movies with iMovie. It's all really great and I'm having fun... but how about actually editing the uploaded videoclips from my camera?
With iMovie I seem to be able to only just make a series of clips, use a template and add some nice effects and all.
I haven't been able to find any option that allows you to even cut the clips and use only a part of the recorded clip. :-O

Does iMovie simply not have these features and do I need some kind of extra software for that, or I'm I just not looking good enough?

If I need any other software, does anyone have any recommendations?
(freeware would be nice!)

Thanks!

Iona, a new Mac user. :$

Short answer: iMovie does let clips be trimmed and cut — the editing controls live in a Project/timeline and in the Clip Trimmer/Precision Editor. 's link points to a longer walkthrough; the steps below give the concise, version‑agnostic workflow that solves the “use only part of a recorded clip” problem.

Import the footage into iMovie’s library, open (or create) a Project, and place the clip on the timeline. Trim a clip by dragging its left or right edge inward to shorten it, or open the Clip Trimmer / Precision Editor to set exact in‑ and out‑points and see unused frames. (support.apple.com)

To cut a long clip into pieces, position the playhead where the cut should occur and use the Split command (Modify > Split Clip) to break the clip into separate segments; unwanted segments can then be deleted or moved. (support.apple.com)

Troubleshooting and quick alternatives: if split/trim commands are disabled, confirm the clip is actually in the Project timeline (not only in the Event browser), that a clip is selected, and the playhead is placed where the edit should be made. For very quick one‑off trims without opening iMovie, QuickTime Player’s Trim tool (yellow handles) can cut a clip and save the result. (support.apple.com)

The Apple iMovie guide linked above contains screenshots and short notes on the Clip Trimmer and Precision Editor for more precise control. This addresses ’s original question about using only a portion of an imported clip and complements ’s suggested tutorial.
