On my system at work animated gifs display only as static images in IE. I've checked that displaying animation and displaying video are enabled in the IE options. I'm on XP pro and also running Zone Alarm firwall. I can't find anything in ZA controls.
Does anybody know what it might be?

Good catch by and confirmation from — ZoneAlarm’s ad/animation blocking is a common culprit for GIFs appearing static in IE. That behavior also explains the oddity reported: GIFs already loaded in the browser will continue to animate because their frames are cached in memory, while any new GIF requests are affected by the blocker until its setting is changed or the page is reloaded.

A practical checklist for similar problems: verify the GIF itself is animated by opening it directly in a browser tab; test the same page in a different browser or a private window to rule out extension interference; temporarily disable ad-blocking/security software or whitelist the site and then force-refresh (Ctrl+F5); clear the browser cache if changes don’t show immediately. If the site still shows static images, try loading the image from another network (mobile hotspot) to rule out a proxy or corporate filter. Also remember many desktop image viewers show only the first frame, so always check animation in a web browser.

For (Windows 7, avatars): forum avatar uploads are often resized or re-encoded server-side and that process commonly strips animation. To test, host the GIF on an external image host and point your profile avatar to that URL (if the forum supports external avatars). If that makes it animate, the forum’s upload/resizing is the issue — ask a moderator about allowing animated avatars or enlarged upload limits. Also confirm the file is a true animated GIF (not a converted PNG/JPEG).

A caution: do not leave security software disabled permanently — prefer whitelisting trusted sites or updating the blocker rules. If problems persist after these checks, capture the direct image URL and report it to the forum admin with details about browser and any security software in use.

I found the problem. Zone Alarm. Turn it off, refresh page, gifs animate. Turn ZA back on, gifs still animate. Only the ones already loaded though. Go to a new page and they don't. I just can't find configuration controls in ZA for this though. I'll keep at it and let you know in case anyone else has the same problem.

Solved it. In privacy>ad blocker>animation (disable it)
