Brief summary and practical triage (based on the OP's symptoms and the posted HijackThis scan): Explorer crashing when opening shell folders combined with a new “.vbs” error after an antivirus removal usually points to either (a) a leftover startup/script reference or broken Windows Script Host, or (b) a third‑party shell/extension (context‑menu handler, BHO, etc.) that crashes explorer.exe. ’s suggestion to run a second‑opinion scan is sensible; the next steps should focus on isolating startup items and identifying the exact faulting module.

A recommended, safe order of work:

  • Boot to Safe Mode (F8). If Explorer does not crash there, the problem is almost certainly a service/startup item or shell extension.
  • Perform a clean‑boot (msconfig) to disable non‑Microsoft services/startup entries and reboot to narrow the offender.
  • Search all startup locations (Start Menu\Programs\Startup, Run/RunOnce keys, Scheduled Tasks) for any *.vbs references left behind by removed software and remove those registry/startup entries only after exporting a backup.
  • Check Event Viewer → Application log for the explorer.exe error and note the “Faulting module” name — that DLL name usually points directly to the problematic component.

Useful checks/commands (run from an Administrator command prompt; export registry keys before editing):

assoc .vbs=VBSFile
ftype VBSFile="%SystemRoot%\System32\WScript.exe" "%1" %*
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wshom.ocx
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\scrrun.dll
sfc /scannow (Windows XP requires the original install CD)

Re‑registering WSH components and restoring the .vbs association often clears the startup script error.

If the Event log shows a third‑party DLL, disable non‑Microsoft shell extensions (ShellExView or Autoruns can help) and retest. If the problem is profile‑specific, create a new local user to confirm. If all else fails, use System Restore or an in‑place repair install after backing up personal data.
