reported audio dropped after a failed IE7 install; ’s System Restore idea and ’s driver/service checks are sensible first steps. The replies from and show the same symptom: Windows marks a device “working” yet no audio is heard. The suggestions below add diagnostics and fixes that are different from the earlier posts and work across older and newer Windows installs.

Quick routing and hardware checks: verify speakers are powered, the correct jack is used (rear green on most PCs), and that the speakers/headphones produce sound when plugged into a phone or another PC. “Device is working” only means a driver is present — if Playback lists a S/PDIF or HDMI (digital) output while the speakers are analog, no sound will reach them. In the Sound control panel (Playback tab on legacy Windows, Settings → Sound → Manage sound devices on Windows 10/11) set the analog “Speakers/Headphones” device as Default and disable S/PDIF/HDMI outputs temporarily. Front-panel jack detection can disable rear jacks; toggling the front jack or the audio manager’s jack-detection option often restores output.

Driver and system repairs: uninstall the audio device from Device Manager and choose to remove driver software, then reboot so Windows redetects the hardware. Prefer the motherboard/OEM audio driver (Realtek, Conexant, Creative) over random third-party packages. On modern Windows, repair corrupted system files from an elevated prompt:

sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

(use only sfc /scannow on very old OS like XP).

Advanced isolation: boot a Linux live USB to test whether sound works outside Windows (hardware OK vs OS issue). Check BIOS/UEFI to ensure onboard audio is enabled and that recent GPU/HDMI driver installs didn’t make HDMI the default. Create a restore point before driver/BIOS changes and avoid downloading drivers from untrusted sites. Useful diagnostic details for this thread: exact Windows version, audio chipset name, and the exact Playback-device string shown by the OS.

Hi there

You use system restore to restore your computer to the day or the time before you installed IE 7

Click start
click help and support
click undo changes with system restore
Click next
choose a day when you knew the system was working perfectly
Click next
and follow the on screen instructions
system will now restore to the date you have choosen and reboot
sound should now work

...or if that doesn't work, check to make sure the sound hardware has all drivers installed properly, and that the correct device is selected in Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio and Voice tab. Also, check that the Windows Audio service is up and running. To check the service status, click start>run and type services.msc. In the services window that opens up, locate the service Windows Audio and make sure the startup type is set as automatic and that the service status is started. If this doesn't work, get back to us and we'll go from there.
