Hello all,
About 2-3 days ago my computer hasn't been able to access the internet. I have Bellsouth Dsl and currently running Windows 2000. I called my ISP and they told me that my modem may have not been working properly and they sent me another one. But I keep getting the same problem with my internet displaying error pages such as "Action Canceled" or "Page cannot be displayed" with a "cannot find server or DNS error". My modem confirms that I'm connected as well as Bellsouth telling me that as well. I've tried winsock fix, flushing my dns and reregistering it, dns page fix, constantly resetting my modem and restarting it, IE fix, the programs that were recommended on here ad aware and spybot and I still get nothing. Now when I restart my modem I can access the internet but it only lasts for about 10 minutes or so. I have no firewall or AVG (I recently had avast prior to the problems and unistalled it because I thought that was the problem) I've decided to submit my HIjack log which is below.
Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Below is my HIjack this log:

Quick diagnosis and practical steps (based on the HijackThis output and the replies): the most likely cause is a browser-level proxy or a helper program that installs/changes a proxy at user logon. That explains why the modem and ISP report “connected” yet pages fail, and why a modem reboot temporarily helps. As suggested, isolate DNS vs raw connectivity; as and noted, double-check adapter settings and the fact USB works points to a configuration difference on the Ethernet interface.

Try these tests in order from a command prompt and interpret results as shown:

ipconfig /all
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

ping 8.8.8.8
ping www.google.com
nslookup www.google.com
route print

Interpretation notes:

  • If ping 8.8.8.8 succeeds but ping by name or nslookup fails, it’s a DNS problem.
  • If both pings fail, it’s a link/adapter or routing issue.
  • If ipconfig shows a valid gateway/DNS but browsing still fails, a proxy or local app is intercepting traffic.

Immediate fixes to try (non-destructive)

  • In Internet Explorer: Tools → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings — turn OFF any manual proxy or automatic configuration script. Restart IE.
  • End suspicious startup processes (Task Manager → End Process for any Tor/Proxy helper). Remove their HKCU Run entries (msconfig or HijackThis carefully).
  • Check C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for unexpected entries.
  • Run a current anti-malware scan (updated definitions) to remove anything that re-applies proxy settings.
  • If nothing changes, reinstall or update the Ethernet driver, and temporarily disable legacy AV/network filter drivers (leftover from removed antivirus).

Cautions: back up the registry before manual edits and use HijackThis “fix” only for the proxy/unknown BHO/startup entries you recognize. If the proxy entry is removed and the problem disappears, follow up with a full malware sweep — unwanted proxies are commonly the symptom, not the root cause.

Download anti-spyware and antivirus and scan and this k this might fix ur plobrem

what's in your hosts file?
do you manage to ping external IPs, or hostnames?

A few things to check:

- Has someone plugged in a new telephone or answering machine on your system, or removed one of the telephone filters?

- Did the phone and DSL cables on the adaptor get switched?

- Are all of the connection lights lit on the modem? If not, you have a service outage or one of the telephone line problems above.

- Did your internet drivers get switched to a dial-up modem somehow?

- Check the settings under the internet connections tab in your tools/options menu.

- Your ISP may be down.

Under network settings please check that you are set to get your IP and DNS servers automatically.

No new telephone or answering machine and I checked the adaptor as well as all the filters. All of the connections lights are on, I checked the network settings and my ISP is up...the funny thing about is that when I tried to connect with my usb cable it works though it disconnects at times I also have to reload a few pages, but I don't like the speed that's sacrificed when I use the usb cable.

Under network settings please check that you are set to get your IP and DNS servers automatically.

I checked that as well and those settings are set on mine.

my name is raul...why dont u try a alternate webbrowser like mozilla...od u can also try delteing cache...resetting websetings and accept all cookies from internet options.....try repairing internet explorer by doing ....sfc /scannow from the run window..if nothing works u need to get in touch with microsoft to repair the browser

The fact that it works with usb indicates that the internet setting has been changed from the ethernet port to a usb port.
