Brief summary and likely direction: reports video plays but no audio on Vista Home Premium and already suggested drivers; since system sound works for games and DVD/CDs the problem is more likely per-application/plugin routing, playback-device selection, or a browser/player codec issue rather than a missing system driver.

Try these focused checks (fast to perform and diagnostic):

  1. Check the page/player and system mixers. Open the Volume Mixer (right-click the speaker icon) and confirm the browser or plugin slider is not muted or turned down. Also check any volume control embedded in the page/player.
  2. Verify the default playback device. Right-click the speaker icon -> Playback devices and ensure the correct speakers/headset (not HDMI/SPDIF) is set as Default. Temporarily disable other devices to force routing to the intended output.
  3. Test the same content in a different browser or with plugins disabled. Old Flash/QuickTime/RealPlayer plugins commonly cause audio problems; updating or switching browsers isolates that.
  4. Save/download the audio (or the MP3) and play it locally with VLC or Windows Media Player. If VLC plays it, the site/plugin is at fault; if local playback fails, the file/codec is the issue.
  5. Check device advanced settings. Open the playback device Properties -> Advanced: try 44100 Hz 16-bit or 48000 Hz 16-bit, disable "Allow applications to take exclusive control," and turn off enhancements.
  6. Restart audio services. Run services.msc and restart Windows Audio (and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder if present). Also briefly disable firewall/security software that might block streaming plugins.

If these steps fail, the next useful details are Vista build (32/64-bit), exact browser and plugin versions, and whether an HDMI/optical output or USB audio device is in use. Those specifics narrow whether the issue is codec/plugin routing, device selection, or a hardware/driver conflict.

Do you have any sort of sound elsewhere like startup noises etc. or is it just no sound all together?

Try checking in your driver list and making sure that your audio drivers are installed properly.

Yes I have normal sound when playing games and playing audio DVD/CD's.
