What platform was it?

On gmail, you can easily restore contacts up to a month back: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1069522?hl=en

Otherwise, if you many of your contacts came from email exchanges you could check out our service which analyzes emails, extracts information from email signatures and automatically updates it in your address book.

In that case I would suggest you to repair disappearing address book contacts- You can choose any third party solution.
