Dell White Papers

Acknowledgment to @Mourin@Dell for the post (Mar 21, 2012). The shared Dell SMB white-paper collection is a good starting point for storage and virtualization research, but vendor papers should be read with an eye toward applicability and reproducibility before being used to make procurement or design decisions.

Key evaluation points include publication date and tested software/firmware versions; exact hardware, controller and network topology; workload profile (block size, read/write mix, concurrency); benchmark methodology and metrics (report p95/p99 latency, IOPS, throughput, not just averages); and the data characteristics behind dedupe/compression claims. Total cost of ownership assumptions (support, licensing, consolidation ratios) should be explicit.

• Publication date and tested software/firmware versions.
• Exact hardware models, controller firmware, switch and cabling details.
• Workload profile: block size, I/O pattern, concurrency, VM density.
• Latency percentiles (p95/p99) and steady-state behavior under contention.
• Data-reduction methodology and sample data characteristics for dedupe/compression claims.
• Failure/recovery testing: rebuild times and performance impact during failures.
• Reproducibility: full configuration details and any vendor tuning applied.

Common pitfalls include synthetic microbenchmarks that do not reflect VDI or database workloads, “up to” headline numbers, omission of snapshot/replication costs, and data-reduction figures reported without sample context. SMB scenarios gain more confidence from recent field case studies, independent benchmarks, and reproducible configuration details; documents from 2012 may reference legacy firmware and hypervisor versions that no longer apply.
