And how to control what is on that homepage? If there is going to be no member control of the homepage, this reminds me of Microsoft's Windows Mobile homepage fiasco. They forbid the user from changing the Windows Mobile homepage.

An algorithm controls what is on the homepage. It's based on your usage across the site, and is similar to your Facebook feed, Reddit feed, Quora feed, etc.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Does the homepage seem a little bit better now? It's still a work in progress.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You clicked on an endorsement suggestion button in the email to endorse diafol. Unfortunately, diafol has deleted his membership. I fixed the bug in which it will no longer suggest deleted members in the future.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There’s a max limit on image dimensions that can be uploaded. The left one is over the limit but the right one should be fine. I’m not sure why you’re not seeing the error message.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yeah, the homepage algorithm seems to work really well for people who visit any amount less frequently than once per week (which is 99.9999999% of traffic). Once you start visiting more than once a week, we simply don't have enough new content to keep up. I agree DaniWeb needs to make more sense for regulars, so it's something I'll work on once I return from my trip.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Currently on vacation for Thanksgiving. Will take a look at this next week.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You must use .on() with code dynamically inserted into the DOM.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Does just this specific query fail? Perhaps there is something wrong with the connection?

Sebas_1 commented: nop, all the other queries are working good ( i cant edit the topic, idk why, on my php code its 'sadasdsa', '4') +0
Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is the html code available when the javascript runs? Are you putting the JS code inside the $(document).ready(function() { } );? You might also want to look at using .on() instead, such as something like $(document).on('.btnGenerate', 'click', function(event) { } );

Note I just typed this code out manually so it might have a typo.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you doing e.preventDefault() or (e).preventDefault()?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'll be able to fix this if you give me an Imgur link that doesn't work for you.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm pretty sure it's related to the specific image or file trying to be uploaded.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think you might have missed my last post.

It might be the specific image you're trying to upload?? Please link to it on Imgur and I will download it from there and try to attach it.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What do you mean no more direct messaging for you?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Test test test.

It might be the specific image you're trying to upload?? Please link to it on Imgur and I will download it from there and try to attach it.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Try clearing out your browser cache. Do you use browser plugins?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Worked for Chrome. Now testing Safari. I'm on MacOS.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And a perfect opportunity for that page to show articles about ...

Those are definitely some good ideas, and things I've thought about in the past, but have not yet gotten around to. I understand the value of the homepage, and it's not going to be backburnered for too much longer.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Also, image upload looks broken.

How so? What errors are you getting? What isn't working?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Something that would actually really help me to fix up this algorithm is to link me to topics that actually are of interest to you, but aren't appearing on the homepage ... e.g. is the algorithm bad in such a way that there's stuff that you think it should be showing you, but it's not? (It should be noted that if there are new posts in a topic we think you'd be interested in, we'll display it on the homepage, but once you read it, whether you accessed it via the homepage or otherwise, it disappears from the homepage).

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You visit DaniWeb too frequently. We don't have that much new content coming in lately. The algorithm has decided that there's simply nothing new that could possibly be of interest to you since your last visit.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's fine to use that as the selector. Use an #id when there is only one per page. Otherwise, using .classes makes sense.

The Javascript that you have does, indeed, not submit the form, and stick the value of data-idx into the idx variable.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This is fixed, but it might take 24 hours for browser caches to clear before it goes itno effect. Or, you can clear your browser cache to force the update.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, the 2 points should be deducted if the comment is removed. I'll look into fixing this tomorrow. Thanks for the catch.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I guess my confusion comes from the fact that the endorsement system hasn't changed since it was created. From a user experience perspective, I'm trying to figure out what it is about the current design that made you first notice its functionality now, all these years later.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You can only endorse people for skills in one of our top-level forums (e.g. Software Dev, Web Dev, etc.) How would you know that someone is skilled in Web Development if they've never posted in any of our Web Dev forums? It's been like this since we created the endorsement system.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, it’s always been the case that you can only endorse members for forums in which they have made at least one post and received at least one upvote.

That page with your personalized endorsement recommendations lists member/forum combinations in which you have personally engaged with that member in that forum.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The page that you're looking at is not designed for you to hunt for the person your want to endorse.

If you know who you want to endorse, you can do so directly from within their profile, by clicking the Endorsements tab.

The page in the screenshot is when you don't know who you want to endorse.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sorry, I'm confused by your confusion. Can you try to explain to me why you're confused so I can see if there's some way I can improve the user experience?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Same as always ...

  • Go into a member's profile and click the endorsements tab
  • In the sidebar, click "Endorse Members" (this link used to be in the top navigation menu, which of course has been moved to the sidebar).
Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I completely swear by jQuery. I love it. I also love that I randomly stumbled upon the fact that the founder follows me on Twitter, but that's another story entirely. That being said, I tried jQuery Mobile a couple of years ago, and found it to be the most buggy POS I've ever come across. It never made it into any of my production code. I, also, found it to not offer much more than swipe events. There are alternative frameworks out there for iOS.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Incidentally, the reason why inline image functionality does not currently exist is because I was unhappy with the way the old platform handled it, and wanted to take some time to come up with something a bit better. We're cornered into using Markdown syntax (which, incidentally, still works if you choose to handcode your inline images).

rproffitt commented: I've resisted installing a markdown editor since this would be my only use for it. But maybe I will anyway. +0
Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm in bed with a cold. Inline image functionality is coming soon. A homepage change is coming soon as well.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This is our algorithm's way of saying, "You visit pretty often, and we don't have that much exciting new content lately. There really isn't anything else we think you'd like to see that you haven't already seen."

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Will be fixed soon. Stay tuned.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks!!

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You could use a js and a css minifier with a version after them (e.g. the timestamp of when the minified happened e.j. app.js?156855452) that way when you change things none should clear their browser cache (in real word production projects that is not an option to ask from visitors)

Yes, we already do that, to a degree. We roll our own JS and CSS minifier that then caches the minified version of the file server-side. We use a query string with a version number, but that part is manual, and I only update it about once per day, despite making about 500 code changes daily this first week of launch. Once things settle down a bit, it will be a non-issue. That being said, I can look into something that stores the version and automatically tacks on the query string, but I don't think there's a super easy way to do that with my current setup.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You're welcome. Thanks for the suggestion!

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You need to clear your browser cache.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It collapses now :)

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, then what you're experiencing is the intended design.

I'll wait for more feedback to see if it should be closed automatically.

No, I understand what you're saying.

I just want to make sure that, even when expanded, it's possible to scroll down to the bottom of the page and see the last post.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Can you take a screenshot and show me what it looks like? (Note you can click on the purple bar to minimize it).

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you using an older web browser by any chance?

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No, it's just supposed to hang out at the bottom of the page (and not cover up any posts).

John_165 commented: But it is covering up the post +0
Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Would the expected behavior be for that to happen? I never thought of doing that LOL.

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And thank you for your comments! This has been the result of lots of late nights!

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

All fixed. Thanks for the catch!

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, I'm able to reproduce this! Hold on while I investigate ...

Dani 4,645 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

To clarify ... you click the thumbs up link in the bottom left corner of a post and a whole new page loads??
