I'm almost sure this has to do with one of my 2 Western Digital hard drives. It happens periodically and I'm almost sure its a sound coming from a drive. I'll hear a sound from my case like something is powering down, then a second later power up again, like a fan cutting on. A couple of seconds after that the whole system locks up. If I simply reset then I usually hear the same sound of something cutting off and back on again, followed by a lock up somewhere in the boot process.

So I push on both IDE cables and power connectors of the hard drives really tightly to make sure they are getting connection. This usually solves the problem temporarily, but it happens again at random in any amount of time from a day to a couple of weeks. Was just curious as to what kind of problem this sounds like, be it the hard drives or bad cables.

My friend bought a copy of Win XP Pro and he has a blank drive to install on. Is it possble to install this separate copy of windows through my Windows and setting his drive as a slave drive? I'd rather not go through the hassle of setting his up as primary drive and installing from a cd boot, as it gave me an error last time.

Strider 0 Light Poster

The problem occurs on the root of the drive, and even in the drive's subfolders there is no security tab.

Strider 0 Light Poster

Sorry but I'm a little confused on those instructions. "Documents nb Settings"?

Anyway I don't see how those settings could be messed up since I never configured anything, and all the other partitioned drives on the same drive have no such problem. Thanks for the help though. If you could clarify on the instructions a bit, I'll be sure to check it out. Heck, I'm open to any suggestions right now.

Why are you doing the copying and pasting method?

Have you tried moving the files without using that method, such as dragging the files to a new destination with the right mouse button held down, releasing the button while hovering over the new destination, and selecting "Move Here"?

Does moving files using that method create the same results?

Isn't that pretty much the same thing? Anyway, right clicking and dragging back and forth back to the root drive produces the same results.

Strider 0 Light Poster

Have you repeated this process with files of a different kind, such as image files or standard text documents?

If so, does the same thing happen (file can't be read, etc)?
If not, try it and see what happens.

Just tested it with a pic, and then a short video file. Both produced the same result. I copied and pasted right on to the root of the drive (H), and it worked. I moved them into a folder on the drive, and they worked there too. Then I pasted them back onto the root again and now they won't read/cut/delete, which is exactally what is happening with every other file type.

Pic: No preview available.
Video: Unable to open G:/(name).wmv
Error when trying to cut/paste: Cannot move (filename): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Ugh...is it possible to move everything off that partition and format it only? Oh and about the access permissions. Deleting etc. works fine until the files become corrupt under the conditons above.

Strider 0 Light Poster

Well its not that I really want to delete the files (mp3s), but Pocket Killbox works fine for me when the files do get messed up. This doesn't happen on any other partitoned drive on the same hard drive. Something happens when I move the mp3s somewhere else on that same drive. They then won't delete by normal methods, and won't even play. I ran a full disk check for errors, and included recovery of bad sectors. Still acting weird on me. Anyone encounted this before?

Strider 0 Light Poster

First of all, this involves a Western Digital 250 GB drive. I partitioned it into 4 seperate drives. Aside from one of the drives on here, all the others seem to be working fine. My "Music" drive, the one causing problems, reads files fine too. That is until you move them after they've been saved. The mp3s read fine, but when I decide to move them to any different folder in that same drive (for organization), is when the problems start. They move but after that I can't play that same mp3 or even delete it and get the "access denied, make sure the file is not protected or currently in use" error. Even a reboot doesn't help, and I'm forced to use pocket killbox to delete the dead files. Another strange thing is that after moving the mp3s they no longer have their ID3 tags anymore.

Really at a loss here guys, any help would be great.

Thanks,

I use Award BIOS on an Epox motherboard, and the beeping pattern is a constant alternating high/low beep. I switched out processor chips becuse I happen to have another Athlon. You mentioned the thermal paste stuff, and yeah thats running a bit thin and dry. One other thing that might help clear this up is my Magic Healh BIOS display. The Vdd voltage indicator jumps around from ok to the red off and on. In the manual it says that the Vdd is the voltage for the chipset. Maybe that might have something to do with my problem?

First of all, please forgive this long post. I want to give details of my dilema, in hopes of getting an accurate response from someone who might be able to help. I posted this originally in the Win XP forum, with little or no input on the problem. I am not posting the same problem here because I am impatient, but rather I feel much more now that this is a hardware problem.

I use normal and fairly decent surfing habbits, using Firefox as my browser, along with AdAware and Spybot for for spyware, and Norton Corporate for virus protection. I also update the definition files almost daily. My freezing problem hit right away. I left my PC on, and came home from work about a week ago to find it locked up. Upon reboot, things were behaving very strangely. The clock was set back to a 2004 date, certain programs wouldn't run, and even when I tried to uninstall them for a fresh install, I would get an error box with "error X file could not be found" or "fatal error durring uninstallation". This made me think that somehow there was a virus infection that slipped by, maybe hitting some serious .dll or registry files. I figured the best thing to do for such a serious problem is to do a fresh XP install and start from scratch.

So yesterday I went out and bought a new hard drive, and proceeded with a new install, only to …

Strider 0 Light Poster

Yeah I thought that was the problem at first, but I'm almost sure its not. I checked all my case and processor fans, and all are running fine. I set my BIOS settings to shut down in the event that the CPU gets too hot, but I've also been keeping a close eye on the temp too, which usually never goes above 55 C. I did replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard, and date, time, etc all seem to be working fine. Don't think that was the issue. I'm leaning towards some kind of problem with the processor chip or motherboard.

This one in particular, began appearing at random right after I entered my user password at Windows startup:

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

Also:

Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. for C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\\UsrClass.dat

In fact, there are looong lists of events logged on the 15th on, the day problems started appearing. The system doesn't seem to be finding the files for certain programs and also lists it as incorrect enviornment?

As for the clock issue, I found something along those lines in the System section:

The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.

I don't know what to make of it all, maybe someone here might?

Ok thanks. I'm assuming nothing looked suspicious in the log then. Well the CMOS battery is cheap, so one thing to knock out of the way. I'm just wondering what is causing the weird program behavior. How would a failed battery cause my computer to reboot when I open a program?

Sorry guys, I cleaned up my log a bit. I put HijackThis in a its own desktop folder, and removed 1 or 2 of the items referred to in the sticky threads.

All seemed to be in order, and just as suddenly as I went to bed and came back from work the next afternoon, my pc had frozen and now acts very strangely. I run AdAware and Spybot regularly, along with Ewido on occasion. I also use Norton Corporate virus protection. When I rebooted I first noticed the date was set back all the way to 2004, and programs were behaving strangely now, either freezing or causing a reboot. Ad-watch also claimed that the definition files were corrupted, and after repeated attempts to update definition files for all my spyware programs, they always appeared again, as if they were never downloaded. A few programs do work, but I tried to uninstall a few and either got a message claiming the program was not found(do you wish to remove from the add/remove?), or a simple error, file not found, etc.

I also fround it strange that freezes would occur before Windows even started loading, and also as it was loading. I even set my BIOS setting to fail safe defaults, but it doesn't seem to be the problem at all. You guys are my last hope, aside from dishing out a lot of money to take it in and get fixed. how do I re-set the default browser to Firefox after it's been installed?

Go to the Control Pannel, and open up Folder Options. Cick on the File Types tab, and scroll down to HTM and HTML files. You should be able to see what it opens with currently, so click on the change button and select Firefox. All url's should open with Firefox after you apply the settings.

Done. Ad-Watch did interfere on the reboot still. Seems its set to active again at startup. All it did was prompt the deletion of the file. I clicked yes and went ahead and rebooted again to make sure the log shows all the necessary info:

I recently hooked up a friend's HD to my system. Turns out I got one of the nastiest forms of spyware out there right now. Using Ad-Aware I found I have VX2 modules and registry keys. Ad-Aware cannot delete it, even with a startup scan. I've tried to manually delete it from the registry, but it always seems reappear. So then I tried downloading the Ad-Aware VX2 cleaner plugin (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4283.html) which still doesn't seem to clean this variant.

As far as my internet connection goes, almost everying works fine. My only current problem is that when using any type of sharing program, it stays in the connecting phase and never connects. They've worked fine in the past with the same settings(as far as I know), but I've recently has to format my hard drive and start fresh. Hasn't been working since. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the quick response and help, guys!

As for my attempts to install again, it usually ends up stopping at the same point, with a simple Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup cancelled. I've tried multiple system restore points, all with the same result. I figure some of the important system files got affected. What sucks is I really don't want to go through all the trouble of all that again, since I already have everything configured just the way I like it, ya know?

Sounds unavoidable though...

You mean I should format and install Windows fresh again? Cuz that would be a huge hassle, involving taking my computer over to a friends again to keep all the files I want.

So I recently wiped my drive and did a fresh Windows XP install. In the process of installing all my software, drivers, updates, etc, my computer froze in the middle of installing of Service Pack 2. It froze with the backing up registry step listed, so I'm pretty sure its the reason why I now can't fully install it. I believe its the same reason I can't get certain programs to install correctly now, nor can I burn onto CD with my CD or DVD burner. Do I need to find the partial installed files and remove them? If so, where are they stored? Any help would be much appreciated!

oh, and make sure the new user has administrator rights. Also, are you using Windows XP or what?

Nothing. I created a new user account with administrator access, checked folder options. The open folders in same window was selected, and everything still opened in a new window. I'm running with Windows XP Professional, SP 1 and 2 installed.

Well, first things first... I'm not trying to insult your intelligence in any way, but I've seen this happen before. After you check "open each folder in the same window" be sure you are clicking on "ok" or "apply". I've seen a few people keep clicking "cancel" after they make changes.

Again, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, I'm just taking the most common and easiest fix first. Then we can move on to other things.

Haha...well honestly I know better than that. I've clicked apply/ok, even tried switching to open in new window setting then back to same window setting. Its gotta be something besides that specific option setting that is causing it. Regardless of which is selected, a new folder window always results. I'm usually pretty good at finding problems on my computer and fixing them, but this simple problem has me at a loss. Thanks for the help though, and I hope others on the board might have an idea.

Double clicking folders to view the contents always results in a new window opening. This is very frustrating when trying to view a deep pathfile. I've already gone to Folder Options and made sure open each folder in same window is selected. I use to have ACD See installed, and this was around the time the problem started occuring. If anyone can help out or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
