Obvious thing to try, but did you try hitting the brightness controls for the screen? The computer can have two different brightness sliders for when it's plugged in and when it's not.

Could be faulty video drivers of some kind, or an invalid resolution setting. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you get a picture then?
