Hi great news I appear to have fixed the problem with your suggestion. I deleted the firefox application and also the folders in my finder and reinstalled the old version. Thanks very much.

Hello Troy, thanks I will give that a go but I think I already tried this in the past. I shall report back if it works.
Ah thank you, could this post be moved to the above link by someone please? Unfortunately I've not found a solution to the problem yet.
Hello I was hoping someone would be kind enough to assist me with a major problem I'm having with firefox. I'm running a Mac OS X 10.5.8 platform from a Macbook Pro and was using a very old version of the web browser firefox - version 3.6.23 to be exact - Some of you may be wondering why I was using such an ancient version - seemingly asking for trouble - but it was so that I could use an add on that is no-longer available on later versions of firefox which I needed when I do Graphic Design projects.
In any case this evening I was trying to find a movie online and installed something horrid onto my mac. Now when I open firefox I receive the following irritating pop-up message '[JavaScript Application] Error:Security Manager vetoed action' which simply wont go away. I have tried uninstalling firefox and reinstalling with a slightly later version (baring in mind I can't run the very latest version of firefox due to the macbook being old) I'm really scratching my head as to fix this problem and would be grateful for any pointers in the right direction. Are there alternative web browsers I could use instead? Thanks.
Hi there,
I've had my Macbook Pro for around 4 years and not encountered any problems till last night. It all appeared to be triggered when I was watching a Youtube video. The video froze whilst I could still hear the sound of the video in the background. I restarted my web browser.
Everything seemed to crash all at once. I took some pictures of what happened to the screen below. My MacbookPro will now no longer start. It starts but the poor thing doesn't make it to my desktop. A friend told me it may be a problem alluding to my Graphic Card. I have a feeling it may have some kind of pesky 'bug' which has disturbed it greatly. I would welcome your advice.

As you can see upon start up there are these very strange 'scribbly' lines that appear above the apple sign which I've never encountered before.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/anti_everything/DSC04339.jpg
I've never seen this happen before ever... quite scary. No idea what was happening. Whilst my desktop was crashing similar squares began to appear all over my screen...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/anti_everything/DSC04336.jpg
I've tried a number of things. Including restarting but as I mentioned earlier I'm unable to make it to my desktop, it just appears to continuously crash upon start up.
Also i tried the PRAM reset but it just beeps starts shuts down and then repeats itself. I also tried holding down Shift …
Hi guys I was working in CS3 Illustrator a minute ago and I noticed that the shift key has stopped working ie it's not constraining my boxes to proportion when I try to resize them. I tried closing down the programme, trashing the illustrator preferences and restarted it but the same problem persists. It's not a problem with my keyboard as everything seems fine with Photoshop and InDesign.
It's such a pain in the arse as I'm trying to do some design work and it's making it impossible to get things done. I'd be ever so grateful if anyone knows how I would go about resolving this? I am at your mercy. Cheers very much.
something strange happened last night. i was on msn messenger, within 5 seconds my friend logged in and sent me a link. the link informed me you could check who had blocked you on msn messenger. just as qucikly he went offline. foolishly i clicked on the link and entered my hotmail address and password. nothing happened. i received a message saying the server was too busy. i thought nothing of it. however last night i signed onto msn messenger and my friend told me 'that link you sent me, it's a virus', 'what link???' i replied confused. 'i didn't send you no link, i haven't even been online i've been at work all day'... what is going on?
i have been reading about spyware/adware. some people say it's impossible for a mac to catch but in the articles i read online apparently macs can get these things. i asked my flatmate about it since she studied computer science. she said i should try and get my mac better protected. but i'm really only a novice when it comes to such things. i have an outdated version of norton anti virus. i'm running a mac os x 10.3.9. should i be running a firewall? does this not come with the norton anti virus? do i have to download it separately? any pointers in the right direction would be gratefully accepted. cheers.
As far as I know, you have to be invisible mode, and there's limitations to what you can do with that. Perhaps use a different messenger?
And really, what does it matter?
Invisble mode? Don't you mean 'offline' mode?
It's a matter of convenience more than anything. Sometimes when I'm online I'm bombarded with silly unwanted msgs, I don't really want to block people. It would be great to have the option of appearing offline yet being able to converse with whom you please...
Is there any way to appear offline and send an instant message to someone on Mac Messenger 6.2? My friend uses a PC and he's able to send me messages whilst he is offline but I can't reply to them :( It's pretty grim
Make sure you keep your Mac updated with the latest SMC and firmware updates. As jbennet pointed out, many of the Mac models have fan problems.
Also, don't use Limewire to download music. ;) It's illegal, and a lot of viruses (on Windows, at least) can be had from downloading stuff. So don't take your chances.
How long have you gone without a reinstall? Macs, like any other computer, need a reformat/reinstallation every once-in-a-while. If you'll forgive the biased-ness of this, you may want to check out this:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread54207.html
What's SMC? Yes I do keep it updated with the various software updates.
As for Limewire, hmm I'm not sure whether I can stop downloading completely! I need my muzic! Actually my Mac seems to be ok now, I ran Norton, it found some kind of strain virus on two of my word documents, it's found them before. It comes from the computers in my uni funnily enough.
Thank you all for your wise words of internet jargon.
what sort of mac is it?
there are known problems with iMac and Macbook fans
also there suopposed to come on during cpu intensive apps like photoshop to keep it cool
A G5 iMac OSX Panther
Sorry, subscription keys cost money, and if you find one, it's either already used by someone else, or it's illegal. The money you pay is for Norton continually releasing updates to protect you against the latest viruses.
My advice: Norton Antivirus will continue to function, even without a subscrption. It won't stay updated, true, but with the amount of Mac viruses out there these days, it's hardly worth the subscription. And as long as you aren't doing anything stupid (such as downloading random files from unknown sites), you shouldn't get yourself in trouble.
Hope this helps
Righteo. I know viruses are very rare on mac OSX but lately I have been experiencing problems. Sometimes the fan will be running really fast & loud like there's no tomorrow when I'm not doing anything particularly amazing, just browsing the net. It never used to do that.
Normally the mac switches the fan on when I'm using my software programme (In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop) I thought perhaps I had some kind of bug messing interfering. I've noticed that it has crashed a few times too, something it's never done before. I wondered whether it may have something to do with downloading music files from Limewire but I don't think it should as I'm notified if I'm downloading a corrupt file.
Dear all,
Sorry to bother you all with my inadequate mac knowledge but I really do need to pick someones brain. I noticed my Norton anti-virus subscription has expired on my Mac OSX. Apparently I must buy a new subscription key. However as I am a destitute student, I have only a few pennies to feed myself let alone purchase software. Where am I to find a subscription key code? I would be grateful for any pointers in the right direction.
Yours Sincerely,

Since we couldn't remove Windows Media Player.app, and "ls -lao" showed that it wasn't the applications bundle itself, this leads me to believe that something within the app's hierarchy had been changed to the immutable flag. Call me paranoid, but with immutable flag set (beleive me, this is an unusual occurance, and I don't know of anything that can will-nilly do this 'by accident'), coupled with the "HTM" running (which indicates to me, HTML, therefore, web page). I believe that someone was running a clandestined website on your Mac.
I'm curious if you would see apache running:
ps -aux | grep httpd
will tell you at least of there's a webserver running.
Glad you got rid of it at least.
ps -aux | grep http
jaspreet XXX X.X X.X 18XXX XXX std U+ 1:26AM 0:00.00 grep http
Jaspreet-Kaur-Shokars-Computer:~ jaspreetkaurshokar$
This was the result. I don't think I had someone fiddling my mac? I replaced the numbers with X's as I wasn't sure whether someone would take advantage if I divulged all. There's always some net nerd out there with nothing better to do.
That's my fault becuase it's .Trash, not .Trashes.
And you're meant to be an expert on these matters tsk.
While it pains my ego, I won't bother worrying about it. I suspect that you will find that the answer has already been supplied. But anyway, good luck getting your answer!
Your ego will be happy to learn that the problem has been rectified. I tried what you told me replacing 'trashes' with 'trash' and it appears to have worked. So a mucho gracias is in order from me. Thanks again. Got there in the end.
Well, there's lots more things to try. I can assure you, if I had access to your computer, I could remove the file. However, it's not always easy to explain things to people via a forum. I suppose if you don't like the free help you're getting, you could always look elsewhere. There's quote a few Mac forums out there.
I guess the app bundle has an immutable flag set on something in it's contents. This is NOT normal. Something (or someone) had to have set it that way. Please note that haveing a file being run from the Trash is also NOT normal. Has your Mac been compromised?
No it hasn't been compromised. There are not immutable flags which have been set. It's clear to me you don't know the solution to the problem. We've been discussing it for over a week now and I haven't gotten any closer to finding an answer. I do appreciate your help but it hasn't gotten me anywhere so I think I should ask some other people for help. Thanks for your patience and sarcasm.
sudo chflags -R nouchg ~/.Trashes
"No such file or directory"
What do you think?
I love the sarcasm.
Well the only reason I'm asking is because everything you've suggested so far has not worked.
In your case, I don't know. Typically, a foo.htm file is an html file from a webpage. Please restart your computer. Nothing will be running from your trash after that. Then do a secure erase.
I just tried that I get the same message about the htm being in use. Do you have a mac os x by the way??
Finder -> Finder pull-down menu -> Secure Empty Trash
Emptying the trash...
"this operation cannot be completed because the item 'htm' is in use"
What's HTM??
There's no reason that you cannot get rid of that file. And the earlier stuff I gave you should have done it.
Everything you have told me to do so far hasn't worked.
Have you tried doing a "Secure Empty Trash"?
I don't know what that is.

Then the file is gone. Check the Trash and see if it's still there.
No it hasn't. The file is still in the Trash. Doesn't seem to wanna budge
Just copy and paste this:
sudo rm -rf /Users/jaspreetkaurshokar/.Trash/Windows Media Player.app
If it fails, I need to know exactly what it said..
Nothing exciting. Just 'Jaspreet-Kaur-Shokars-Computer:~ jaspreetkaurshokar$'
You should be trying this, now.. note that the addition of the -rf flags will remove the application bundle (which is a directory). Please note that it is:
sudo<space>rm<space>-rf<space>/Users/jaspreetkaurshokar/.Trash/Windows Media Player.app
Then press Return. Enter your admin password.
Thanks for your patience. However it's still not working. I typed everything as you said. The plot thickens...
No, there is no add/remove program on the Mac.
OK, we try again (we're getting there)..
sudo rm -rf /Users/jaspreetkaurshokar/.Trash/Windows Media Player.app
What am I meant to be trying again exactly?
:D
I'll tell you why..
As in, press the space bar after typing in rm and before dragging the file to the Terminal window.
I did as you said and I got 'rm: /Users/jaspreetkaurshokar/.Trash/Windows Media Player.app: is a directory Jaspreet-Kaur-Shokars-Computer:'
So it's clearly not working this 'terminal' business... how awful  Is there an add/remove programme on Mac? I can't seem to find one?
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type in:
sudo rm
(Note, there's a space after "rm"), now drag the WM file into the Terminal window, it should automatically complete the path to the file. Now hit Return and type in your admin password.
The file should be gone from your Trash.
I tried that and got 'sudo: rm/Users/jaspreetkaurshokar/.Trash/Windows Media Player.app: command not found' aaaargh!
Just to make sure..
You held down the Option button before choosing "Empty Trash" from the Finder pull-down menu, and kept holding it until the trash was emptied (or not emptied)?
Yes I held down the options key but I get the same message about the file being 'locked' No idea why that is. Is there some other way I can delete the file?
To delete the problem file: Empty the trash while holding down the Option key.
Thanks for the kind words. I tried that but I still get the message 'The operation cannot be completed because the item wmphelp.htm is locked'.
To fix WMP, delete the file com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist.
To find it, open your home directory (the one with the little house on it in the Users folder). Go to Library. Go to Preferences. Trash the file called "com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist".
Try starting WMP. Does it work now?
Unfortunetly none of the other files in my trash are deleted due to the annoying refusal of deletion from the faulty Windows Media file.
I'm having an AWFUL time trying to rid my mac of a faulty Windows Media file. I have tried deleting it by putting it in the trash but that doesn't work because it is supposedly 'locked' (whatever that means!). When I do try and open the file I get; 'The application WindowsMediaPlayer has unexpectedly quit' The System and other applications have not been affected. Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple? - Yeah I know what I'd like to submit to Apple
I have downloaded a newer version of Windows Media which is working fine. However the older version has overridden it so to speak. My Windows Media Files no longer open for instance even though I have a installed a healthy Windows Media Player. As I'm a new user with mac it would be generous if someone could find it in their heart to help me with this problem by explaining in PLAIN ENGLISH. I'm not clued up with that computer gibbirish just yet. If I'm not helped I might just wallow in despair for eternity. Poor me, my happiness lay in your hands.
How dreadful I'm having the same problem, could someone PLEASE speak in English here? I did not understand the last instructions, it's all gibbirish to me. Firstly can't located any sysoc.inf file, and second where is the add/remove function? Yes that's right unfortunetly I'm a touch DIM and a complete newbie to Mac. I have OS X by the way. I'm having the same trouble as the girl before me. I don't know how to get rid of my faulty windows media file. I did reinstall another version but it won't let me replace the older useless one. Could someone please find it in their heart to help as I may be condemned forevermore in the depths of despair if I don't fix this annoying problem. Cheers
