Group, I've dabbled in coding (both front end and back end) since the mid 1990s. However I've never done it full time (except for a short stint writing database query's in 2015 and 2016). Because of the economic downturn in 2008 and the sale of Starwood Hotels to Marriott, I find myself with accepting what amounts to temp jobs to (somewhat) support myself. Thus I've pondered the idea of a coding school or a certificated program through one of the local college to gain useful skills in the field. But here's the rub: I'm almost 60. So here are a …

Hey geniuses. So currently I'm interning at a small application development firm. At our corporate office we have a junk network setup (unmanaged switches, little dinky wireless routers scattered around). My boss and a consultant are working together to put together a network for our office (about 100-150 users). I was wondering, what are the things I should look for as they're planning and implementing the new network? I know they're purchasing some heavy duty equipment (managed switches, business grade router with dedicated Fast Ethernet, etc). The reason I ask is, as I'm studying for my CCNA, I want to …

Hi there, I have a general question regarding video for web (sort of). One of the departments I work with would like to create a short narrated training video using still photos. Basically what they want to do is have a type of slideshow with probably some basic arrows or other shapes (elipses etc.) to highlight areas and then narrated. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to the best software to do this with. For example, should we just create a powerpoint slide show with the images and shapes and then add the voice over or would …

I need to take a class on using C++ Libraries. Something that's about 3 months in duration, with some sort of a test at the end. I could easily just go to google and start there, but I was afraid that I would just get a zillion classes, without any way of knowing what is "shinola" and what is s***thing else. Any suggestions for high quality, online learning that fills this bill would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I'm looking for some type of online training that will prepare me to work with Vbulletin & other forum software, and websites in general. I have a CS degree, [although that was back in '84], worked as a "network technician & admin" for several years on a very large Novell token-ring network and was a CNE at one time, plus, have been into computer hardware and software for quite a while [Win, Linux, Unix]. Specifically, I'd like to work from home and do things such as custom skins, perform 'add-ons' to forums and sites, and be able to trouble-shoot problems …

If you've been following this blog for any length of time, you know I focus a lot on employment -- or lack thereof -- in the tech sector. I'm always on the lookout for ways IT professionals can get additional skills or enhance the ones they have, so I feel compelled to tell you about Microsoft's new initiative, Elevate America, that's designed to strengthen the tech sector even though I'm not so sure about the motive behind it. I'm torn between thinking Microsoft's new program is a generous way to help people expand or acquire new skills, and that it's …

IT consultants, by the very nature of the job, will face new challenges involving different technologies when moving from project to project or contract to contract. Each new opportunity involves evaluating a clients' requirements, and where necessary re-aligning those expectations or possibly re-defining the scope of the contract and its deliverables. Clients can vary in their understanding of what a consultant will bring to the table and occasionally expect areas of expertise that are outside of the usual remit. Generally however a consultant will take responsibility for one or two specific tasks, namely to :

[I]advise organisations on how …
