Hi I have decided to update my PC to Windows 7 64 bit. My existing PC has a lot of programs and data that needs to be preserved. I have read that with Vista Business an inplace install can be made but wonder if that is correct. If not I'll need to move programs or reinstall them. I have two hard drives so I am thiniking about copying all the files on the C drive to another drive - drive F. or just copying My Documents and the program files to drive F. If I copy all the files I …

Hi All, I have recently viewed something that I have never seen before with regards to a computer. I saw a window close and open really fast, at least 10 times upon startup. It looked like the cmd.exe window but I only saw a video of it happening and it was really quick. Anyhow, is something like this a memory leak of some sort or?.... The OS is Windows Vista.

I am on travel and was advised my Win Vista machine had supposedly been infected with the 'interpol' virus approximately one month ago. A family member noticed some odd behavior and took the PC to an 'in-store' tech center for a diagnostic. This center stated the machine was infected and made some general comments about resetting default setting but did not specify any changes they may or may not have applied. Btw, this same place was all too eager to have this machine sent off to their repair facility for a hefty fee so they could further assess the situation. …

I have a laptop that runs Windows Vista and when I turn it on Windows won't boot. Instead, I get this error message. Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. File: …

Recently I had a new motherboard installed to replace my old one that overheated. The new motherboard is a MSI H55M-E23 that has an Intel core i5 650 chipset installed. After getting all the drivers to work, I then installed my old XFX Geforce 9500 gt (512mb gddr3) in the pci-e x16 slot. When I went to turn my pc back on it wouldn't boot. I then removed the graphics card from it's slot and it booted up just fine. The same thing happened with my DIAMOND XtremeSound 5.1/16 bit Sound Card when I put it in the PCI slot. …

Just updated a HP desktop Vista Home Premium machine. Boot goes to the welcome screen then goes black. My monitor has a power and a video signal light and both remain on. Have never had success with the selective startup but it might be my inexperience with it. In safe mode with networking I can get online to post this issue and obviously the display is working. I know I can roll back SP2 but would like to troubleshoot this one. Guidance sought

Hi there, I'm another one of those people who's stuck with Access: Local Only on an HP notebook with Vista. I don't have access to an ethernet cable connection, so wireless is my only hope. My Macbook gets connection fine; that's what I'm using right now. I tried following the advice from previous threads (http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-vista-and-windows-7/threads/73818/vista-local-access-only-problem) and (http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=541157) but to no avail. I disabled IPv6, configured IPv4 with a fixed IP adress, disabled LMHOSTS, and enabled Netbios over TCP/IP. Here's what it looks like: C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . …

Hi All I've noticed recently that in some circumstances Windows Explorer is maxing out when I'm trying to access flash drives. Typically, I insert a flash drive, open my shared folder (which has full access for everyone), then try copying the data I want from the PC to the flash drive. What happens is that as soon as I plug the flash drive in, CPU usage jumps to 89% or more (depending on what other bits of the system want), and getting anything on / off the flash drive is literally like using an old 486. My thought on what …

I bought a used laptop and the former owner partitioned the hardrive (no big deal) but added a second operating system on the other partition. I have windows 7 on the primary partiton but don't know how to uninstall an operating system and don't know if there is a risk of losing the files on the second partition. Is there a way for me to undo the partition itself? I probly won't anyway but I heard laptops don't function as well with partitions and might change my mind. Would I have to back-up my files externally if I did? -Thnx

I can't access any folders (control panel included), or certain programs (most programs, only windows based programs such as media player still work). The programs and folders are actually running, as they are showing as running when I open the task manager, but I can't access them anywhere. They do not show on my task bar, or anywhere else. Also, when I load up my computer, all the programs that normally start are running (they show on task manager), but they do not show in the bottom right hand corner of the task bar, nor can I access them. The …

Hello everyone, I have a 300gb Sata hard drive that I partitioned into 3 partitions: (C:(System, OS) 60gb) - (D:(Music and Videos) 100gb) - (E: (My Studio) 140gb) Something happened and D: & E: disappeared. I bought a program called "Mini-tool Power data recovery" and I was successful in recovering all of my lost files. Now I want to repartition the hard drive back and just use it as one Partition because I bought two more hard drives to do what I had done with the hard drive in question. When I click on "my computer" it shows my C: …

When I try turn on my computer, it starts as usual until it gets to the enter password screen.. where it only stays there for a few seconds.. then a blue screen flashes with a lot written on it, but not long enough to read anything it says.. and the whole process starts over again, can anyone help? I've tried system restore already and that doesn't work. (I have an HP Laptop with Windows Vista.. not sure if that will help at all.. but I'm not exactly the most computer savvy person in the world.)

Hi, after a while of searches I have decided to ask the community for help. This post is the closest to mine, however it's been inactive for a while. Here is what I did prior to the problem. (I've had my computer for a very long time, so new hardware is not the cause of the problem). I will post comp specs if needed. Currently running Windows Vista 32bit. I noticed my boot up was becoming quite slow so I went into msconfig to change number of processors as well as to set maximum memory. (In the general tab, selective …

Widows Vista screen on, no image or sounds. Hard boot used to work. (I've heard powering a computer off that way is not good?) Followed cumulative advice: 1. VGA chord worked. For some reason, images showed up on my monitor/television. 2. I remembered to count the tabs (1 and enter, no password) to make it through a blind log on screen for windows. 3. Right click on screen > graphic options > output to > notebook 4. (Now for where I screwed up in the past and didn't follow instructions) When you right click, there is also GRAPHIC PROPERTIES, this …

alright i've been googling this and trying things for hours and i'm stuck. here is my problem: I just received a new laptop for Christmas to replace my older Toshiba Satellite L300D-06T and I intended to give the Toshiba to my brother to replace his desktop. Thinking I am oh so clever, I took all the relevant personal files off the old laptop and moved them to the new laptop and proceeded to try and put on a fresh install of Windows 7. This is where it gets tricky; my Toshiba came with Vista 64 bit already installed but because …

A friend asked me to look at their Dell Inspiron 1525 (Vista OS) because it's not starting up. Here's what happens. When you press the power button, a black screen flashes with the Dell Logo. Then immediately the laptop powers back off. The 'on' button remains lit but the fans aren't running and the screen is black. I've checked the battery and power cord. I'd really like to fix this device for my friend. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you in advance.

It takes forever and seems to take longer with each passing version. I remember some time ago Bill Gates ordering his programmers to speed up boot time. They seemed to have missed the memo because it never happened, and if anything it got worse. [B]2. Gives us …
