I have just picked up a poorly G4 (fails to boot OS 9.2 unless extensions turned off).

I thought It was a corrupted OS, so I bought OS X. But when I try to install it, it won't boot from CD. If i hold down the "C" whilst truning on all I get is a grey screen with an apple on it.

I am beginning to suspect that the motherboard is not happy with the DVD/CD.

Is there any easy way I can eliminate where the problem lies?

This is my first encounter with Macs, up to now always used PC's. Is the internal DVD compatible with a PC one? if so I could try it in a PC to see if it was OK (the hard drive looks like a standard IDE hard drive like in a PC!)
