Will running FIXMBR in the recovery console affect the data that is on a drive or should the drive be backed up as much as possible before doing this?

It is always a good idea to back up before making any major change or running anything that you even think might erase data.

I have a 500G external hard drive that i back my computer up on i got it for about $100 at Best Buy. then i have a 160G external that i back my other external up on then i leave that one unplugged while im not backing up info. that way if either my computer or my 500G get hit by a surge or just go out i have a perfectly preserved copy of my data. and the chances of 3 hdds going out at once is very slim.
