reported a Gateway laptop that fails to complete power-up and shared a similar troubleshooting path on a different machine that ended up pointing at the motherboard. When a laptop shows intermittent or immediate loss of power at press of the button, the most useful approach is a short, methodical elimination of the power path and easily removed components before assuming board-level failure.

Useful diagnostic sequence:

  • Remove all external power and the battery (if removable), then press-and-hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to discharge residual power; try powering from AC only, then from battery only.
  • Verify the adapter output with a multimeter against the voltage printed on the adapter label; check the adapter LED (if present) and inspect the barrel plug for wear.
  • Inspect and flex the DC jack gently while attempting to power; a cracked or loose jack is a common intermittent fault.
  • Reduce to minimal parts: one memory module (try each stick in each slot), no HDD/optical, no cards. Note any change in LED blink/beep pattern.
  • Photograph and write down any LED blink or beep sequence; consult the model service manual or manufacturer support for code meanings.
  • Open the chassis and visually inspect the logic board for bulging/leaking capacitors, burn marks, corrosion, or cracked solder joints. Observe ESD precautions and disconnect power before touching internals.
  • Avoid board-level work unless experienced; shorting power-on pads or probing rails is diagnostic but carries risk.

If adapter/jack and simple module swaps rule out those items, the logic board or its power regulation circuitry is the likely culprit. Laptop CPUs are often soldered, so a CPU swap is frequently impractical; replacing or repairing the mainboard (match exact part numbers/BIOS) is typically required, which aligns with s real-world outcome. Consider repair-vs-replace based on parts cost and the machine age.

well i tryed th cord its fine ram is fine i was thinking it might be motherboard or cpu honestly

i had a Toshiba doing the same thing ,changed the cpu and power coard ,ram ,no different so we determined it to be motherboard and sold it for parts
