I am worried about my laptop, Gateway P-6860fx, overheating. How do I check that the laptop is working correctly, that it is not overheating?

Useful follow-ups to 's suggestion for checking temps, targeted at the Gateway P-6860fx and similar laptops.

Start by distinguishing sensor-reported heat from mechanical failure: look for constant high fan speed, grinding or rattling noises, sudden performance drops under light tasks, or a bulging battery. Combine a short hardware inspection with logged temperature data so decisions (clean, repaste, replace fan) are evidence-based rather than guesswork.

Quick diagnostic workflow:

  • Power off and inspect vents for dust; shine a light into the exhaust and intake ports.
  • With the laptop powered (no heavy work yet) listen for fan behaviour and any abnormal noise.
  • Use the BIOS/hardware-monitor page if available to note fan RPM and sensor readings, then run a short controlled load (CPU or GPU stress for a few minutes) to see how quickly temps rise and whether fan speed responds. If sensors show rapid rises or fan does not increase RPM, the cooling path or fan is suspect.

Basic remediation and cautions:

  • External cleaning first: power off, remove battery if possible, use short bursts of compressed air into vents while preventing the fan from free-spinning. Avoid vacuums and long continuous blasts.
  • If temps stay high, consider opening access panels to carefully remove dust from fan and fins, and replace thermal paste on CPU/GPU only if comfortable doing so (use proper paste and follow disassembly guides).
  • Update BIOS and drivers, try a less-aggressive power profile as a temporary fix, and use a cooling pad if needed. If the fan is noisy, not spinning, or the machine smells/burns, stop using it and seek professional service, especially if under warranty.

How do I check that the laptop is working correctly

by using the laptop ,maybe

usually you can tell by how hot its getting on the bottom of the laptop ,and is it getting hot and shutting down on you after using it for awhile .

download speccy this program when run will show temps of some of the harware of the laptop .run laptop for awhile to let it heat up a bit ,then run the program let it analyze the laptop ,then go to file and click on publish snapshot ,and click copy to clipboard and post the link here so we can see
