How can a DVD disk become unreadable from wear and tear?

it gets scratched or cracked ,some computer repair shops have disk polishing repair machines if you need for fixed ,they sometime work ,the machines have there limits

They also degrade over time due to oxidisation and other chemical changes. Cheaper DVD-ROMs I have from the late 90s are malfunctioning already.

thanks for your help :)

I have had some success cleaning cd & DVD using first soapy water and soft ,cloth and then a fine metal polish (and clean off agazin)
