When I turn on my laptop (compaq f700) it'll boot up fine then after about a minute or so the display scrambles.
Sometimes the screen is dark with purple spots or the colors are really scrambled. We recently bought a power cord from ebay, could this be the problem? I have not checked to see if external display works as it is s-video jack and I cannot find one to use.

It sounds like a screen resolution issue. A power cord shouldnt cause this type of issue, and even if it did, it would show the problem from the moment you boot your computer.
Boot the computer, prior to Windows starting, hit F8, boot into Safe Mode, change the video display to something that you know is supported, restart the computer, see if it clears it up.
