Short expert summary and a focused checklist for the symptom described (disc spins, drive lights but nothing appears in My Computer). Several replies from and covered the usual possibilities; the steps below prioritize non‑destructive software checks first, then registry fixes, then hardware checks if the OS never sees the device.

Start with basic detection: confirm the drive appears in the BIOS/boot menu, then in Device Manager (Start → Run → devmgmt.msc). If the drive is absent from Device Manager, enable hidden/non‑present devices (set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 before launching Device Manager) and look under both “DVD/CD‑ROM drives” and “IDE/ATAPI controllers.” If the drive is present but has no drive letter, use Disk Management to assign a letter. If drivers look bad, uninstall the DVD/CD entries and the ATA channels and reboot so Windows redetects them. (support.microsoft.com)

When software/driver checks fail, try the registry repairs documented by Microsoft: back up the registry, then remove UpperFilters and LowerFilters (if present) under the CD/DVD class key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), and consider the EnumDevice1 atapi entry method if needed. These steps often resolve Code 19/31/39 errors caused by recording software or driver conflicts—back up first and follow the KB guidance. (support.microsoft.com)

If Windows and BIOS both do not list the drive, move to hardware checks for a laptop: power‑reset the machine (remove battery and AC, hold power button), then reseat the optical module and inspect the connector for corrosion or a loose cable. Consult the Presario V3000 service manual for the exact removal steps and spare part numbers before attempting a replacement. If the drive still spins but is never detected, replacement is usually the final step. ()

Record error codes from Device Manager and which fixes were tried. In many cases the software/registry sequence avoids unnecessary replacement; when hardware replacement is chosen, follow the service manual procedures.
