I press the power button, system starts to load - then stops within seconds. Sometimes PC gets as far as start up screen, so I try to get into Safe Mode but - PC switches off. Any help appreciated. It's a Dell, reliable up to now although six years old. Please help.

Maybe the CPU is overheating. You can check by opening the case and first checking to see if the fan is working. If it is, its also possible (usually on older models) that the heat sink may not be flush against the CPU; therefore unable to transfer the heat. If that's the case, you'd need to purchase some thermo paste and reapply, then make sure the heat sink is flush against the cpu nad held in place.

If its the fan that still working but not spinning within its "normal" operation, just replace the fan.
