The problem is that if people are constantly "bumping" old threads they'll essentially spam a forum organized by "last post". This isn't a problem if done responsibly (look at the daniweb forum, the first few threads are very old "featured" threads that are constantly receiving posts. There's nothing wrong with responding to an old post for a good reason, just don't try to intentionally bump your own thread for attention or respond to old posts with "yep", since this will bring it to the top of the list and I doubt that these members from 2001 really need that validation.
