If you see a blinking line cursor at the Compaq logo screen it's time to press F10 key. Set your bios at default and exit.

try tapping F10 to get to the BIOS when you first power on. Then check to see if the Hard drive and Optical drives are detecting(should display this info on the first screen)

If they do detect, check the boot sequence(CD/HDD first...lan last)

If not, try removing them and reseeding to see if they are making adequate connection.

Tried pressing F10 and F12 but nothing happens. What type of problems do you get with bad ram?

The hard drive lights up and the dvd drive spins up you can hear it. but that 's all

hmmm...remove the hard drive and see what happens...

Bad ram may cause it, but doubtful. Either you would boot up to a cd/hdd or not boot at all.

Something is causing you to 'boot from lan', either it is set as first boot device, or the cd/hdd is not detected as 'bootable' (or not detected at all)
