Hi there, I have posted previously but did not post the required logs. The logs that i am attaching have been done in the last couple of days. Albeit, MBAM a few days before.

Getting SVCHOST.EXE when starting up the computer. I think it did cause Internet Explorer 7 to shut down. However, since then IE 8 has been downloaded and is working, but did not remove SCVHOST.exe.

Also, Outlook Express will no longer open and some other applications to.

Hope you can help.

Thanks

David

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

* Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip
* Extract its contents to your desktop.
* Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

* If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

* If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

* It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

* If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
* If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Then please RE-Run all other programs that you previously ran. All are dated 13 days ago and unless this computer has been sitting, disconnected from the internet and totally powered off there is a good chance that multiple other infected files have been installed.

i'm not really into using programs to kill viruses, so i'll offer a different perspective.

how do you know it's a virus? maybe the service that the svchost wants to run is necessary for you. svchost, as you should know, is a generic name for the process that shows up in the task manager for any number of running services.

if the svchost isn't slapping you across the face and telling you that it's malware, i would run a "sfc" from either the run dialog or the command prompt. google that to see what exactly i'm talking about.

You state yourself above

Obviously you don't know how to read the logs posted. The op has a rootkit on the system and it must be removed.
The advice you have given is very bad advice.

Thank you for the reply Jholland. I will work on the download and run all other scans as advised tonight.

Much appreciated.

==== End Of File ===========================

Couple things I see in your DDS log that must be addressed:
You have at least a portion of an old Norton program on your system, as shown by this entry in the Installed programs section:
LiveUpdate 3.1 (Symantec Corporation)This must be uninstalled.

Your Java is way out of date and definitely should be updated.
You need to remove all of the old versions of Java first. Do this by running this program:

Please download JavaRa.zip to your Desktop and Extract it to its own folder.

-- Make sure ALL browsers are CLOSED.
-- DoubleClick on JavaRa.exe to run it (or whatever hoops Vista makes you jump through) and then select your language of choice.
-- Click Remove Older Versions.
-- Follow the prompts and a log will pop up - please post that for us.

After you have removed those old versions then go to this page http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Download the OFF line install file and save it to your desktop.
Once that install file is on the desktop then close ALL browsers, double click that install file to install the newest version. Watch the install VERY CAREFULLY, very often extra toolbars are included in the install, you DON'T want those and will need to remove the check mark that is next to each so that you won't get those.
After it is installed then go back to the download page to verify that the install went as planned. Do this by clicking Verify Now on the right to check this.

After you have done this then I would like you Run the ESET Online Scanner

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/scanner.php?i_agree=14
* You can use Internet Explorer or you may use Firefox to complete this scan and you will need to allow an Active X to be installed
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

Post back with the requested logs.

JavaRa 1.16 Removal Log.

Report follows after line.

------------------------------------

Finished reporting.

Hi

I tried installing Java via your instructions, however it keeps failing.

I downloaded the offline file and closed all browsers.

There is no report or error code for me to report, only for me to try reinstalling later on.

I will try again soon, but in the meantime i will scan via eset.

Also, I have uninstalled the Norton file along with spyware Doctor.

OK, run into a further problem.

When clicking on the eset link that you provided it comes up with 404 ERROR (we are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found). However, this on a banner of the eset web page.

To sum up. Cannot install latest Java and unable to run ESET online. Any other options?

For the moment, don't try the Java install until you get the ok. But please do the ESET scan.

Hi, managed to find an alternative link for the ESET scanner, it was at the bottom of the ESET page under home users. Log Below.

Still finding infection so think we better keep cleaning:
Please download ComboFix by sUBs from

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix

Please note that the BleepingComputer.com download link will expire in 10 minutes after you click it so if you don’t click within ten minutes after reaching the page you will need to refresh the page.

• You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
• Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
• When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
• This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
• Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..
• Then post back here with that log and a new scan log from HiJackThis.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. Update MBA-M and run another Full Scan with it, have it remove everything found, Reboot.
Come back here and post that new log.

Do things seem any better?

Also I would like you to do this:
Go to this website
http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

and upload this file for scanning and report back what it tells you. It may say this file has been previously scanned there before and do you want to see that report but tell it that you want it scanned again because you want your copy of the file scanned. Here is the file you need to upload:

c:\program files\lfcajaxq

Hi there, sorry about not getting back to you sooner myself. Been busy with work.

However, things do seem to be working much better. No warnings are coming up when I Boot and everything is working quicker.

But there are still a few things that need addressing if you do not mind. I will put a few questions below now and i will then post the new MBAM log and carry out the other virus scan that you have instructed.

1) I uninstalled AVG9 to allow Combofix to work. Can you please recommend an Anti Virus programme. Whether it be free or not.

2) Internet Explorer works fine but I think this maybe because IE8 was downloaded. However, Outlook Express still does not open. I do not even get a flash of it opening and then closing and get no error reports. Your thoughts on this please!!

3) When you asked me to install the new Java it would not install. I have not tried again since. Should I do this now?

MBAM Log to follow.

I have tried to upload the file c:\program files\lfcajaxq but there seems to be no file in that folder to upload?!?!

Do you still have Combofix on the computer?

I have tried to upload the file c:\program files\lfcajaxq but there seems to be no file in that folder to upload?!?!

That is very good! That was an infected file but it shows it has been removed.

When did you install IE8? Did Outlook Express work prior to the install of IE8?

Neither IE7 or Oulook Express would open initially. I think IE8 was installed just before i put the logs up.

and yes, combofix is still on the computer.

Do me a favor, run a new DDS scan and post back with both the logs it produces.
