Hi,

This just happened a few hours ago, and since i'm not computer smart the only solution I know of, which I tried, was restarting the computer.

Anyhow, the problem is that it seems i'm missing some text files or something because so far I have discovered:
1) I use MSN and I cannot read the messages I send or receive (I see white screens). In addition, their contact name window just has the MSN icon and not their name.
2) When I go to shutdown, the 'standby/restart/shutdown' box is a lot larger than normal, as if the resolution was 640x480 (I run 1024x768). Noticing this, I decided to reset my display properties, but they are all white and blanked out, without text.
3) In fact seems that I'm missing a lot of 'button text' as in texts on buttons.
4) The font I type in search bars is now different (more compact) than before.

I tried running AVG, but my AVG crashes when I think i click update (buttons names arn't there). Here is my HijackThis log. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Good call by — restoring missing/corrupted Windows system files is exactly what fixed the blank buttons and missing text that described. The symptoms you saw (blank control text, contact names not drawing, UI elements looking like a very-low resolution dialog) line up with damaged UI/resource files or fonts, so having those files replaced will typically restore normal rendering.

A few suggested follow-ups now that the UI is visible again:

  • Verify there are no lingering malware or stray installers. The HiJackThis log shows startup entries and at least one item launching from a temporary folder; entries that run from Temp and any unknown Winsock/LSP entries should be investigated. Run a full, updated antivirus + a dedicated anti‑malware scan (boot to Safe Mode if the AV is unstable) and remove confirmed threats.

  • Clean up startup and services. Use msconfig or Sysinternals Autoruns to disable non‑Microsoft startup items, especially things that point into C:\Windows\Temp or other temp folders. Keep a copy of the HijackThis log before you remove anything — it’s useful for later comparison.

  • Check system health and performance. Open Task Manager and sort by CPU and Disk to find what’s causing slowness. Run chkdsk /f (scheduled at reboot) to rule out disk errors, run Disk Cleanup, and defragment if it’s a mechanical drive. If AVG or another AV is crashing on update, uninstall and reinstall the security software or try a different scanner temporarily.

  • Fonts and drivers. Confirm core UI fonts are present in C:\Windows\Fonts (missing/corrupt UI fonts can cause text problems). If visual glitches recur, reinstall the display driver and any theme/visual components.

Make a full backup or a restore point now that the system is stable. If problems repeat after cleaning and repairs, the next safe escalation is an in‑place repair of Windows XP or a clean install — but try the scans, startup cleanup, disk checks and driver reinstall first.

go to run and type sfc /scannow

it may ask for your windows cd, otherwise the process is silent. Reboot afterwards

Thanks a lot! It works perfectly now and I can see all the text.

Do you mind telling me how it was fixed? As a side note my computer is runnign incredibly slow now but I will post that problem in another thread.

SFC (System File Checker) checks to see if your core windows files are missing/corrupted by checking them against ones that windows keeps safe, or if they are not present, or also damaged, the ones on the windows CD.

I think that maybe the theme engine was corrupted in your cae
