Most likely cause (short): a 32GB card/reader that’s “not readable” to Mac OS X 10.4 usually means the drive is formatted with a filesystem Tiger doesn’t support (exFAT is a frequent culprit on newer high‑capacity media). Apple added exFAT support in later releases (macOS from 10.6.5 onward), so a stock Tiger/PowerPC system will often refuse to mount SDXC/exFAT media. Snow Leopard (10.6) that gained broader exFAT support is Intel‑only, so a PowerPC Mac can’t simply be upgraded to get native exFAT support. (en.wikipedia.org)

Practical steps (do these in order):

  • Try simple hardware checks first: different USB port or cable, a powered hub, or the reader/card in another computer (Windows or Linux). Check the SD card lock tab if applicable.

  • Confirm whether the Mac even sees the USB device: About This Mac → More Info → System Profiler → USB. If it shows up, open Disk Utility and look for the top‑level device (not a volume). If Disk Utility won’t let you initialize/erase, use Terminal to list disks:

    diskutil list

This reveals whether the drive is visible to the OS. (manpagez.com)

  • If the device is visible, reformat (after backing up) to a format Tiger understands: MS‑DOS (FAT) / FAT32 for best cross‑platform compatibility on disks ≤32GB, or Mac OS Extended (HFS+) for Mac‑only use. Disk Utility recommends MS‑DOS for 32GB or less and exFAT for larger media (exFAT only if the target machine supports it). Note FAT32 limits single files to ~4GB. (support.apple.com)

If Disk Utility and Terminal can’t see the device it’s probably a reader/card or power problem; try reformatting on another machine or in Linux (as suggested), or follow the device maker’s support notes (as recommended). later reported that the manufacturer KB fixed the specific unit. Always back up before reformatting and double‑check you’re selecting the correct disk to avoid data loss.

Seems the easiest way to get help on this would be to contact the manufacturer.
Without more knowledge of the product (make, model, compatibility) it makes it hard to come to definitive answers.
Sorry I couldn't help more. Someone on here probably has had experience with them.

I once had that problem as well with my USB-Stick. I managed to get it working again under Linux. Try to format your storage there and even if it's not working you may can then format it under Mac.

Did work for me that time.
