As discovered, Windows Live Messenger keeps separate font controls: a global default in the main Options dialog and per-conversation/font settings inside each chat window. That design means changing the global default alone will not always change already-open conversations or chats that were given their own local font choice.
Recommended steps to make the setting stick:
If the chosen point size still looks larger than expected, Vista DPI/Display scaling is often the reason: point sizes map to pixels based on the system DPI. Check Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Display and ensure text scaling is at 100% (or adjust as needed). Also note that highly decorative fonts can render poorly at very small point sizes; using a standard UI font (Tahoma, Segoe UI, Arial) gives more predictable on-screen results.
If per-contact settings keep reverting, clear or close older conversation windows, restart Messenger, and reapply the desired font inside each chat. Windows Live Messenger is an older, unsupported client, so behavior may vary across versions and OS DPI settings.
wow k, nice help.
figured it out, i had to change both the view and the font size for each conversation window/contact.
