We have a Windows 2003 Server Standard with SQL 2000 installed in a workgroup called "SUNDANCE". My question is can I somehow have that Windows Server communicate with AD on another Windows 2003 server that is part of a separate domain? I would like to have all connections to the Server 2003 in the SUNDANCE workgroup pull user credentials from the domain AD. I'm trying to avoid joining it to the domain because of other complications.

To use AD, you'll have to either add the workgroup server to the same domain, or a different domain in the same forrest.
