IE shuts down when clicking a link

I've ran norton, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. Cleaned a lot of crap out, but still can't seem to get IE to work properly. It will shutdown as soon as I click a favorite or a link on a page (must click twice). Also, it seem to be at the same time, my brother's computer IE won't load a .htm, or .html page and instead gives him a "file download" prompt for the page, even if the page is "default:blank".

Well, update, I fixed my brothers computer... Had to reinstall windows XP, but at least it works now. My computer still doesn't allow me to use internet explorer. Which isn't really a bad thing, now that I've gotten use to Firefox, but it is somewhat annoying.

Anyone have any idea?

This problem could occur because of Spyware , go on over to the Security section of this fourm and post you problem along with a hijackthis log .

Please do this.
Download 'Hijack This!'. HijackThis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

This may work for ya. Go to start,run type in regsvr32 Urlmon.dll. Notice the space between 32 and urlmon. That needs to be there. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on the dll file. Here are a few others using the same process I found to help. Mshtml.dll Actxprxy.dll Oleaut32.dll Shell32.dll Shdocvw.dll. Run each process seperate. Do the Urlmon.dll Then regsvr32 Mshtml.dll. A space needs to be between the 32 and the dll file. Reboot and give it a shot. Maxthon browser is almost like ie6 with tabs and does not have alot of the same issues as ie6 :). Just rember each dll file seperate. You will recive a pop up window saying sucess. Each dll file I think needs to be capatlized. Please someone correct me if This information is wrong. It sure worked for me though.........peace........im out.......Ps. The maxthon browser is free. Maxthon.com

Well, Tim, I did all the above changes and my IE7 still shuts down when I click on a link or action on a web page. WTHeck? I don't know what the problem is or what to do about it. (And I can't believe I did the suggestions mentioned without knowing anything about helloimtim!)
