On start-up the D-drive contents are displayed. Sure I can close it by clicking the x but is there a way to stop this appearing?

Look in Start >> Programs >> Startup and see if there is a shortcut to your D:\ drive. If there is, just delete it. If there is not, please provide your Windows version and we'll check out the system startup files.
