For : intermittent mismatch between the highlighted message and what appears in the reading/preview pane is most commonly a local display/indexing issue or a view-state glitch rather than a server-side problem. Because it started recently and affects only some messages, focus on non-destructive checks first, then move to safer rebuild/repair steps if needed.

  1. Quick, non-destructive fixes
  • Toggle the reading pane off and back on (use the View menu to switch Reading/Preview pane Off -> Right/Bottom -> Off).
  • Restart Windows Live Mail and then the PC to clear transient UI/cache state.
  • Open a message in its own window (double-click) to confirm the message content matches the store.
  • Change sorting/grouping for the folder (date/subject) to see whether selection alignment changes.
  1. Moderate troubleshooting (no loss of mail when done carefully)
  • Temporarily disable any antivirus email-scanning features and re-check the preview behavior. Some scanners hook into mail clients and can interfere with rendering.
  • Move one or two problem messages to a brand-new folder and observe whether the preview syncs correctly. If so, the original folder’s index/state may be corrupted.
  1. Safer repair steps (backup first)
  • Close Windows Live Mail and make a full backup of the local store folder (example path): %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\ — copy that folder to an external location before making changes.
  • Use Control Panel -> Programs and Features to repair Windows Live Essentials / Windows Live Mail. A repair forces WLM to rebuild local components without deleting mail when the store is backed up.
  • If corruption persists, export messages (or keep the backup) and consider reinstalling/repairing the client or testing with a new Windows user account to isolate a profile-specific problem.

Notes and caution: always back up the Windows Live Mail folder before renaming/removing files. Because this is intermittent and folder-specific, rebuilding indexes or repairing the client usually resolves it; persistent, repeatable failures for the same messages suggest local store corruption or a problematic message file. If long-term reliability is required, consider migrating mail to a currently supported client.
