Hi there,

Firstly, thanks for the kudos!

Secondly, have you tried clicking the New tab on the homepage?

It brings you to https://www.daniweb.com/new

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Let me see what I can do to accomidate :)

My apologies for not following up in this thread sooner. I've been away on vacation for the past 8 days, and just arrived home last night at midnight.

I've gone ahead and added a tooltip to the hamburger menu that indicates that it's a Forum List. Additionally, I've added two additional dropdown menus to the top of the Finder Menu to easily recall your Favorite Forums and Favorite Tags.

Suzie, I'm sorry, I can't recall the reason you gave.

Minimalist, my question is how do you arrive at the thread in the first place? If you know you read the first page already, why not jump directly to the last page from the place you arrived at the thread?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I forget the reasoning for it, but ever since designing that feature 5+ years ago, attachments weren't available from the homepage. I believe it was a UI reason but I don't remember exactly. Either way, the form on the homepage is streamlined.

You can add attachments when in the full 'Start New Discussion' page.

Firstly, I've just returned home from my 8 day vacation in Miami and am now returning to work on DaniWeb and Dazah :) So here I go ...

I believe I askesd this question before and didn't get any answers I was happy enough with. Please provide me a use case in which you need to select a specific page number when visiting the first page of a thread.

Either you are coming from a thread listing page, where you can hop to the last page. Or you are coming from an outside Google search, where you need to start reading from the top anyways.

I'm currently away for the week so unable to make changes as I don't have easy access to my development environment.

However, the site was unfortunately down for a large chunk of time today (middle of the night, my time). According to James, the sit went down six times throughout the night, and I saw about 2 hours of combined downtime when I awoke.

I'll be going on a trip for the next 8 days with my mom and grandma. Leaving tomorrow. Will be back the evening of the 21st.

See everyone soon!

We use a newer version of the same editor though. And, since I was unable to reproduce the problem myself, I don't want to do something that I'm not confident will work across the board.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Have I mentioned how much I like it (now that I've given it a fair shake)?

Were you one of the people who disliked it at first? I can't keep track. :-P

Yes, reverted back to the way things were yesterday morning (but I still don't understand why they weren't working for you yesterday morning but they are working for you now.)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You're getting inconsistent results retrieving forums because they are sometimes cached.

When using file_get_contents, always use https (it will work).

It's just cURL requests with POST data that are not working with https right now.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You can now use the https://www.daniweb.com/api/articles/{:TAGS} endpoint, where {:TAGS} is a semi-colon delimited list of tags. They use OR instead of intersect.

Additionally, I've discovered tonight that you might be getting NULL back because you are using an older version of cURL, and your cURL request cannot connect over SSL. Try using http:// instead of https:// in the cURL request. Yes, it's insecure, but I'm currently looking for a workaround.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We were having problems with resizing the editor causing issues on some older web browsers that I was unable to reproduce. (Reverend Jim was experiencing the problems, and I witnessed it in person when he visited NY.)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK great! :)

cereal commented: Thanks Dani! +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately, there was never a tags endpoint, and the API has not been updated since switching to the tag-based system. While there is currently no way to filter results by tags (only forums) but this will be handled very soon. I'll try to get to it tonight or tomorrow the latest.

Diafol, in looking at the database, it seems that we are receiving your OAuth request and are generating an access token for you, but you are not exchanging the code for the access token.

I can't imagine why you are getting NULL for response. You should be getting, at least, a friendly error message :(

I copied and pasted your exact code with my client_id and client_secret and it printed out a JSON object that was correct. I then tried using a bad secret, and I received the following:

object(stdClass)#59 (2) {
  ["error"]=>
string(90) "There was an error fetching an access token. The client_id and client_secret do not match."
  ["request_data"]=>

Actually, I take that back. I think your tag cloud might be cached on your end. I'm seeing entirely different tags for you.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Diafol, you've never posted in any asp or asp.net threads?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi there and welcome to DaniWeb!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

DaniWeb caters to all skill levels ... If you have a specific question or discussion topic, feel free to ask. As rproffitt says, what type of help desk support are you talking about?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Member tag clouds should now be much more relevant.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I cannot agree more. Years ago, there were a number of things that we did that were very innovative and never before done, and it really propelled us to success. However, over the past few years, there hasn't been much in the way of complete innovation ... the industry landscape changed, and we did more of, as you say, borrowing concepts from here, and borrowing concepts from there.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm actually a fan of XenForo. As you know, DaniWeb was based on vBulletin for 10+ years, and I was incredibly involved in the vB community. When vB went downhill upon being acquired by Internet Brands, the developers jumped ship and went on to create XenForo. I know the developers personally, and when vBulletin started snowballing downhill, they were coding the initial release of XenForo at the same time as I was coding DaniWeb off of vBulletin, and we were comparing notes.

That being said, it's now 5 years later, and unfortunately I think that XenForo is a bit stuck in the past. Traditional forum software just can't compete with the modern web. I'm seeing a big shift to Discourse.org, a forum/tag hybrid software created by the guy behind StackOverflow, only designed for a community as opposed to Q&A.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's supposed to be for yours, but it's forum-based. So while it used to be more specific in knowing that you postin C++ over Java, for example, now it just knows you post in Software Development, and therefore shows you Software Development's most popular tags.

I tried a billion times but it was just too resource-intensive to show your most popular tags, not forum-specific. I might have another go at that though.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When did this start happening? Did it coincide with our redesign?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, you do.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, my keyboard is working fine on every other program.

Do you mean it works fine with every other website, or every other program except for your web browser?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Think I have too much of a run-on sentence, eh? :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sorry for the silence, and thank you for the feedback everyone. I ended up redoing the homepage and incorporating as much of the wording as I could there with screenshots. Hopefully that will make it less intimidating.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And what is SO, refered to earlier please ?

StackOverflow.com

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

One thing I'm not particularly fond of is the landing page for a catergory. I can only see three threads on my screen at any one time before needing to scroll, SO is pretty much the same, but I can see five there. On classic forum software I can see ten or fifteen, which is my personal preference.

This is because we include the descriptions of articles below each title.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I would submit that most people even now, when they hear the word "forum" visualize vBulletin, phpBB, Invision IPBoard etcetera.

Not millennials. A lot of college kids and young adults beginning their careers weren't around during the days of phpBB etc. Forum software was super hot back in 2000-2005, and then has been fading away ever since. The young developers we tend to cater to were 10 years old when forum software was hot.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Perhaps we're not a forum in the same sense as one would define a forum ten years ago, but not many of those forums are ranking well on the web anymore. Times change, and it's important to keep up with the trends. Fifteen years ago we labeled ourselves an IT discussion community, and that's still what we are ... and still have the registered trademark to prove it :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Bug fixed along with an additional bug that was discovered related to some functionality in the editor toolbar being broken as a result of the editor's API changing in its new version and some functionality being deprecated.

Also, I'm excited to say I got the Dazah work I had on my plate completed as well. Yay me!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Can you confirm that a 'non social media login' will remain for accessing DaniWeb

Yes, there are no plans to remove that functionality. I understand that a lot of people don't use social networks, and/or they are legacy members before our social media logins existed.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Not currently, no. You will have to be sure you are logged in before posting.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

To the right of the article title.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, unfortunately, it's somewhat "by design" and most likely will not be changed soon. I know, sorry.

The reasoning is that we are strongly trying to move away from the traditional (somewhat legacy) login mechanism to Log In via your social network.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup, I can reproduce this and I'll check this out and hopefully find a solution later today or tomorrow. Sorry, I'm currently juggling DaniWeb and Dazah and in the middle of a big Dazah project.

After only DaniWeb for 15 years, please bear with me while I still try to navigate my way towards a good balance.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Issue: Navigation Bar on the homepage doesn't appear when you're in a sub category (must go back to home if you want to choose another category)

There is the blue icon in the top right of every page for the dropdown navigation menu. Is this what you're referring to?

Issue: I'm not too sure if this is occurring elsewhere, but in the Software Category it seems that since there isn't language specific categories anymore, people are posting the language name in the forum title, sometimes not even putting a basic description (just the language name).

We migrated to a tagging system. Can others confirm an influx of people using less accurate titles now?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is it currently workking in VB.NET?

I haven't changed anything.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I see that daniweb.com has been updated but now I don't see a solved button on any of my threads.

It's in an odd placement, at the top right of the page. Working on an improvement to that :)

Also, could someone tell me why I don't get any spelling feedback while typing a post on daniweb? Every other site I'm on I get spelling feedback. Thanks.

Because we use an editor that lets us retain spaces, have Markdown syntax highlighting, and some other features. As such, it's not a traditional textbox, and therefore your web browser doesn't recognize it as such in order to activate its spell checker.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused. When copying/pasting code, you need to highlight it all and hit the tab button, or use the code button in the toolbar. That's the same behavior as always?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

But scrolling to bottom is such a PITA.

Why do you need to scroll to the bottom? Why do you need it at all? The dropdown provided by the search is 1000% more relevant and useful IMHO.

But that may just be my perception.

Yes.

You dont want to mess with Google, why its that? Please elaborate.

For over a decade, Google used to send us a LOT of traffic. That was where the majority of our visitors came from. Then they stopped. And it got worse and worse and worse each day. Less traffic also means less advertising revenue, and it got so bad that I've had to spend a huge portion of my savings just being able to afford our hosting bills to keep the site up over the past 2 years. Now, for the first time in two whole years, Google traffic is starting to improve.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The popular tags at the bottom is a waste of space - literally - much more useful at the top.

It's there at the bottom because it's always been there, and with Google being as picky as they are, and with our traffic finally starting to climb back up, I really don't want to mess with changing any content right now. If it was up to me, I would just remove the tag cloud at the bottom. My luck that doing so would significantly reduce the cross-linking amongst all our millions of pages on a massive scale and shake things up with Google too much.

I couldn't imagine a related tag cloud coming to the top of pages anytime soon. I'm not a big fan to begin with of the one on the bottom, so I don't see having it take up prime real estate and pushing the content down as something in my game plan right now.

The purpose of the dropdown when you click in the search field without typing anything is designed to be a much more effective, efficient and useful version that doesn't take up any extra space.

But i do feel the mass of avatar, profile cv changes does little for a user experience, more so on a hand phone that desktop maybe

Sorry, I'm misunderstanding you. The mass of avatar? ... What changed about profile CVs?

dtpp commented: I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH ALL THE ABOVE +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

One idea would be to have back the "Read this before posting" thread in top of each category.

We determined after many years that no one read that :(

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi,

I'm really sorry you feel that way. Obviously your donations have been extraordinarily appreciated.

That being said, why can't someone give just PHP help, by just checking out questions that have been tagged with PHP?

The advantage is that now someone else can just give MySQL help, by just checking out questions that have been tagged with MySQL.

Questions are now seen by more people because, before, a single question that was related to PHP/MySQL had to be placed in just one forum or the other, and now it can show that it is equally related to both by being tagged with both.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Huh? I'm confused by your question. Just how to have a website that is SEO friendly? There's thousands of things ... there's a whole industry around it. Do you have any specific questions?
