Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yea I was just talking to Jimmy and he gets 300 or something upload ... I just tested and I got 900ish

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

LOL ;D it's true! I had a problem for awhile where my PCs networked together via a hub could only sometimes see each other, and when they could they were crawling at ridiculously slow speeds. I tried everything from reconfiguring Network Neighborhood to swapping out hubs. Took me 2 days to figure out the cable got caught around a corner and was being pinched. Oopsies!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK It took awhile but I think I got the problem figured out. The antenna just needed to be moved a bit. Kept getting random interference.

While my mom is using a wireless lan to share files between computers, both connect to the internet via dial-up AOL accounts.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Tek, "diane" is my mom :o She's got one desktop upstairs and one desktop downstairs (directly below it) with external USB wireless linksys network cards. The downstairs PC sometimes can't browse the network (the "workgroup is not available" error message) and sometimes it works. Sometimes nothing needs to be done for it to suddenly work. The upstairs PC can always browse the network. When the downstairs one isn't working, though, the upstairs one can only see itself. They're both XP Pro Corporate (warez vers)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Okay! :D I just created a new category for bragging rights! Share your PC specs in the Hardware forum under the PC Specs category.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hehe ... I *was* dual booting my Linux box with Win2K but now I'm strictly using Linux with that pc. Note the post was from February. The dual booting lasted approximately 2 days.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I've got a linux (yes, linux) PC that's a P4 1.8GHz with 512MB DDR RAM, an ATI Radeon video card, SoundBlaster Live! Platinum sound card, a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive, a 21" monitor, and a case that is modeled after tux the penguin!

Yes, this is just bragging. But it's new and I'm happy. At least I'm dual booting ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You can't forget www.thinkgeek.com !

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are they noticably slower? I've always gone with 7200s since back in the day.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

128MB of video RAM ?! DAMN !!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have 512MB of DDR ram in my XP box. I happen to have some extra laying around. Would it be a bad idea to just stick it in there? ;) *L*

anywayz .................
I probably only have an extra stick of ram or so. Does ddr ram on an AMD Athlon XP mobo need to be installed in pairs?

http://www.abby-cheat.com/ ... cheat collection for all your favorite games!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Anyone know of any cheats or trainers for Airport Tycoon? It's a really crappy game but I'm looking for trainers for it all the same :-P

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Cheating is good for some games ... like Game Genie on the ol' Nintendo and Sega systems. As far as most computer games, cheating can help you learn the game ... but then it isn't fun once you know you *could* do it yourself if you really tried. Ok, that's my rant on cheating. That's that.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I promise you - it's a hopeless case convincing me to start playing Diablo!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Okay, it's all fixed up now. It turns out that the place where you enter the names of the moderators is case sensitive. I typed in all the moderators' names in lowercase, inscissor was the only person who made a username that was all lowercase.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

For the life of me, does anyone know why all the moderators don't have their "stars" when they post! Inscissor does ?! Gotta go figure this one out !!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

LOL

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That makes total sense ... where I wanna go is to avoid this being a place for computer newbies. I mean, we will have tech support, but not "how do I click the start menu and go to my programs" type deal.

Stuff for comp techs by comp techs ... think that might work?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, if you've been having problems with this forum lately (e.g. things all look wacked) it's because I've been experimenting with some mods.

If you see the chat icon at the top (in the navigation bar), do me a favor and see if you can get it to do shit.

It's supposed to integrade a chat with an ICQ IRC applet or something? Do any of you peeps have ICQ? I do and it still doesn't do anything for me!

OK I'm totally confused now ... back to work on this!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK I got it figured out!

THE GOOD - It *does* e-mail you with a link back to the specific thread.

THE BAD - Hotmail automatically adds the e-mail to your Junk E-mail folder.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

and now for the answer!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm checking on "check this if you wish to be notified of replies to this topic ...";

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Damn phpMyAdmin !! Okay I've got the database saved as a .sql file on my hard drive. I'm going to back this thing up weekly (if I can remember to!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nonono ... I meant, that with 800mb, we don't need to archive due to lack of space. We can just keep filling up the database!

Still looking into making regular back-ups of the database though. I think I might need to call my hosting company for info about that. The database isn't stored with all my other files.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This doesn't seem to be a problem anymore ... not with the new server!

Right now we're using 35MB of space! Out of an available 800MB !!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This will depend on how popular this board gets, but what do you people think about deleting old posts? After how many days should they be deleted? (30 days, 2 months, etc.?)

I mean it's really great to have a lot of posts ... and sometimes questions you may have were answered a long time ago ... but do we really want to sort through 1-year-old posts in a computer forum where the technology is changing day by day?

Post your ideas here ... everything's taken into consideration.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Listen everyone ... I know this site is loading very very slow! I'm looking into fixing the problem. It turns out it's on the server's end. The host I am using is looking into fixing the problem sometime tomorrow. If they aren't successful, I'm going to end up switching hosts (which might make this site inactive for a day or two at max.) No matter what, though, the problem will be resolved by the weekend one way or another!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I've got homework. I mean, not just a lil bit of schoolwork ... but a shitload of homework to do. And I'm procrastinating. And I'm bored. So I think I'll just play around in the forums for a bit.

alpha, can you crop your footer and get rid of all that excess black? just a suggestion

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Almost a year and a half later and ... well, still going strong! Okay, well, still plodding on ;) But the important thing is that we have over 400 members now and are gaining new members and posts every day!

Thank you everyone who's contributed to techtalk in any way! You've all been great.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey, ppl. I'm really sorry ... in the whole redoing of the forums, I accidently forgot the name of the two cookies I used to remember your username and password ... so you have to log in again. :(

Proud of myself though - I actually managed to save all of the messages!

Alpha, if you are still having problems, IM me on AIM and I can just give you a new password.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I hope so! What we need now are tutorials and reviews. So, please, people! If you can write *anyting* please just send it off to cscgal@msn.com ... thanx dudes and dudettes.

... this goes for registry tweaks, etc. :)

LCDs actually have less eye strain than CRTs
also, they don't give off radiation like CRTs do

On the other hand, LCDs have much lower refresh rates
and graphics aren't as vibrant

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So ... do ya like your lcd? Do ya, do ya?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have two PCs in my room right now. My Windows box has an 18.1" Sony LCD, and my Linux box has a 21" Sony flatscreen CRT (ya know, one of those CRTs with TrueFlat technology or whatever the hell they call it now.)

In any case, I would go for the CRT. My LCD is cool and everything, but let me just tell you that the only reason I have it is because a regular size monitor can't even possibly fit on my desk. (My 21" is on a smaller desk on the other side of the room.)

No matter who tries to tell you otherwise, the quality of LCDs doesn't even COMPARE to that of the good ol' regular monitor. The colors are always off and awkward, and the monitor's life expectancy is shorter too.

Plus, you could get such a better and bigger CRT monitor for one-third the price of a smaller LCD.

Also, LCDs always screw up DOS-mode. (e.g. the screen is always off-center). Also, years ago I used an ATI Rage 128 card, and I couldn't use video-out because each time I did, it screwed up the LCDs resolution.

Also, LCDs have what is called a native resolution. That means that they come "made" for a particular resolution, and any other resolution you choose will ALWAYS look like crap no matter what.

LCDs are much worse for gaming, too, because the refresh rate is always slower. Plus, cool DirectX …
