i have used kind of screen capture software called

ACA Capture Pro , i think it can handle it .
it is pretty good for the person who has to capture abundont images or videos from pages.

As for your problem,i am not quite sure that but you can try ACA capture PRo.... ,it is not only capturing the video,it can also capture almost all kinds of files such as swf, all static images, flash on the website, window's menu item...Moreover, ACA capture PRo support selected-area capture function, it is mean that you have a more flexible screen capture resolution.....

although it made your computer unbootable , it can't infect your hardware. All you need to do is re-installing you OS and fomating your hardware and then everthing is ok. so did the MBR Virus.

assembly language is necessary,i think. Creating an OS is not a easy job, the first thing you need to do is getting the source code of the existing OS and read it.
