You may also want to determine your kind of paper. A tissue paper or a cardboard?

FTP uses ports 20 & 21 (22 if sftp), MS SQL uses 1433 & 1434. Enabling FTP won't do you any good.
Besides FTP can be blocked by the firewall as well. If there are problems due to firewall, you create a rule to allo specific traffic, you don't disable firewall or start FTP services.
If disabling the firewall is lame, how do you find giving access to your HDD and command prompt?

Stop being hard. I have had same issues that way severally. Its not about the ports. I use a windows 7 PC and it denies access to sql server when you get it installed. For example, a web application that tries to connect to a remote system on your LAN, Windows firewall wont grant the application access to sql server as long as FTP access is not enabled.

It would be best you use let the system detect the current time the use logged in and logged out because if you let the users do that themselves, they may play a trick on you

My question concerns software architects that have experience with UML/UTP.

Introduction:
We are currently in the start phase of a new project, where documentation for hardware with embedded software is written. I am responsible for the GUI development. As the starting point, a predecessor model is used. Its GUI was presented to me as the first information with some planned modifications to it.

Although I have more than 15 years of software development experience, I was rarely involved at the start phase of projects, as I am working as a consulter. Consulters are often called when the project is running out of time...

As I consider it important to start with test documentation in parallel to functional specification, I think about using UML for the description of functional parts. For the test, I think of model-driven testing and to use UTP (UML Test Profile).

Details:
In our system, three types of users (actors) exist: power plant technician, commissioning technician, and system expert. The GUI is primarily used to
1. Watch values and change index values
2. Make the commissioning of the device (commissioning mode)
3. Install new software or make system maintenance (expert mode)

There only exist prescriptions for the commissioning phase. Reading and changing values over currently nine menus and their submenus is not described in detail, as it is more or less straightforward.

My question:
Is in such a project the use of UML/UTP to be recommended, and to what extend? …

I seriously doubt they ever delete the data, it's far too valuable for their marketing departments (and too much links to it, like "friends" networks).

Orkut, being owned by Google, of course (like Google) never deletes anything at all. Same is true with GMail. If you delete a message there it's just made invisible to you, but still used by Google themselves for their purposes (thus can be sold to 3rd parties if they pay enough).

That's where the income from those sites comes from. If you don't like your private data being sold to the highest bidder, don't use them.

Another thing I must say is that because of programming and CSE in general, I have made a lot of new friends with varying personalities. Heck, my last girlfriend I meet was from a tutoring center for CSE. So I guess before programming, I had few friends, but after programming, don't know whether it was college or what but it definitely changed me for the better.

That's true. I have also made friends especially back in school because everyone wants ti be friends of programmers as they see them with people with strong sense of reasoning and one who can always solve their problems.

state the DBMS in use so as to apply the appropriate connection string.

why would you want to execute commands from a text-box when you can simply declare variables to hold the commands.

You may have everything well installed but some times, the Windows Firewall prevents remote access to your computer except such application is on its trusted list. You cannot turn off your system firewall just because you want to grant external users access to one application......thats lame so you can just enable FTP access on the windows firewall.

The code picks all info displayed on the splash screen from the Assembly Information

you need to determine the data to be collected from the database and the way you want it displayed so you can pick the best data control to display your data in whatever language you choose.
