My opinion is that keyword variation is similar keyword around your main keyword. Example: If Your main keyword is hotel in Slovenia, are keyword variations: cheap hotel in Slovenia, budget hotel in Slovenia, etc...

There is not any different method of building backlinks for different search engines.Try to get natural links by working on blog commenting,forums,article marketing,guest posting etc..You will surely get rankings!!
