hi i have a friend that just bought a new Gateway. well he got a error that said system32\ntoskrnl.exe was missing so he tried to do a self recovery since he doesn't have the recovery disk. well it didn't self recover and now it says the OS is missing. comes up a blank black screen. any thoughts on what he should do.

Reinstall Windows. Obviously the BIOS can't find any valid operating system on the hard disk, because the files have probably gotten corrupted. It's probably a good idea to reformat the partition that Windows was previously on, too.
If you don't have the Windows install disk, you should buy it, because it will be useful not only now, but if you ever need to repair an installation, or service an existing one.
