Several posters here (, , , , ) have already voiced strong opinions about the homepage look. The points below add practical, evergreen guidance that wasn’t covered earlier: image quality and performance, privacy/licensing, and simple troubleshooting if the custom look is undesirable.

Pick images that scale well. Use widescreen aspect ratios (16:9 or 16:10) and widths in the 1366–1920px range for a crisp result on most monitors. Save photos as optimized JPEGs and line art or logos as PNGs. Compress aggressively (target ~200–500 KB) so the homepage loads quickly. Convert to sRGB and preview the image at several window sizes to ensure the focal area remains visible.

Mind privacy and copyright. Only upload images you own or have explicit rights to use. Uploaded images may be stored under your account or photo library settings, so check those areas if you want to remove an image later. Avoid pictures that reveal sensitive personal information when using a shared computer.

Quick troubleshooting and context. If a custom background is unwanted, use the homepage customization control to replace or remove it; if that option isn’t available, try signing out or clearing site cookies to restore the default view. This is a client-side, cosmetic change and does not affect search indexing or rankings, although page visuals can influence user trust and behavior for logged-in users.

Once you Login to Google you can choose your own image and enjoy the background.

Yup, it's been around for a few months now. Those Bing imitators!! Personally I think it's terrible. When it first came out, it was enabled by default, and there was such public outrage that it was taken down within hours.

My "Change Background Image" has been up for a couple of months and is still there by default. I don't use it because I don't want it to look like Bing. I had the same outrage when I first saw it. I don't like "Google Creep" with more links and features creeping onto the homepage. I prefer a clean design now just as I did 10 years ago.

Ya that's a pretty interesting to change any background pic or upload your pic also.
Google feature is always helpful as well as interesting also.
