Hi,

I'm looking for personal preferences and suggestions to keyword targeting on your home page?

If I have a website with 3 products and each product then has sub-products. I will be creating a page to target each one of those products and sub-products to the keyword targeting process for those pages is quite straight forward however... What do I target on the home page? THe 3 high level products are probably the 3 most important things for me to target however, what should I do on the home page?

If i target all 3 I will obviusly dilute the value of each and will not rank effectively for any of them (and anyway, they'll have their own page to target)

What are the suggestions that members here use?

asked the right question: the homepage should not try to be the landing page for every product-level keyword. linked some good reading, but actionable steps were missing. The homepage works best as the brand-level gateway and topical hub: target the brand plus one or two high-level category/intent signals, then funnel users and search engines to the dedicated product pages for long-tail and transactional queries.

Concrete setup:

 • Title tag: include brand and the top-level category/benefit; keep it readable and focused.
 • H1 and above-the-fold copy: state the primary value proposition, not a keyword list. One short paragraph that describes what the site does, followed by clear links to the three product areas.
 • Internal linking: use descriptive anchor text from the homepage to each product and sub-product; that passes relevance and helps the product pages rank for their focused keywords.
 • Meta description: summarize brand + primary categories and use a CTA, but let product pages own product-specific messaging.

Example (replace with real text):

Acme Co — Cloud Backup, File Sync, Secure Archiving

Reliable backup and file sync for small businesses

Product A — scalable backup

Practical cautions and quick workflow:

 • Do not stuff the homepage with dozens of product keywords; that dilutes signals.
 • Keep the homepage content unique and concise; avoid copying product descriptions onto it.
 • Ensure the homepage canonical points to itself and is not noindexed.
 • Use analytics/Search Console to see what queries bring users to the homepage and iterate if the homepage is unexpectedly ranking for something unintended.
 • Let product landing pages be the heavy-weight SEO assets (rich content, schema, reviews, targeted title/H1/meta).

This approach preserves homepage authority, improves internal linking, and lets each product page compete for its own keyword set without cross-contamination.
