I’m not talking about advertising or affiliate marketing or selling on eBay. I’m talking about new ways in new economy.

1 Sell photos on stock photography sites. If people like your photos, maybe you’re destined for photographic greatness or maybe just for a few extra dollars. It’s easier than ever to get your photos out in front of the public, which of course means a tremendous amount of competition, but also means it might be an convenient way for you to build up a secondary income stream. You can upload and market your photos here:

2. Become a virtual gold farmer. About 500.000 (half million) Chinese now earn income by acquiring and selling World of Warcraft gold to gamers in other countries. But what’s amazing about it is the opportunity to make real money working in a virtual world. Just type “world of warcraft farming gold” on Google and see how it´s works.

This thread correctly flags that "new economy" routes exist beyond ads, affiliates, or eBay. raised that point years ago and reminded readers about geographic arbitrage; posted a high-traffic model (be cautious about legality and moderation). Below are practical, up-to-date alternatives and a short, actionable playbook that avoid repeating specific examples already posted here.

  • Sell digital products and assets (templates, presets, code snippets, patterns). Low overhead, high margins; scale by packaging bundles and adding a simple license. See Gumroad for a common creator checkout flow: Gumroad features.
  • Build short specialist courses or paid workshops. Focus on one narrow problem and teach a clear outcome — students buy results, not lectures. Starter platform options are described here: Udemy — teach.
  • Launch a paid newsletter or membership for a tight niche. Recurring revenue beats one-off sales when content consistently solves a problem. Substack and Patreon are common entry points: .
  • Use print-on-demand or made-to-order merch to monetize design skills without inventory. Printful and similar services integrate with stores and handle fulfillment: Printful.

Quick 5-step sprint (one week)

  1. Validate demand: pre-sell a one-page offer or survey a niche community.
  2. Deliver an MVP product (single template, short course, or newsletter issue).
  3. Set up payments (Gumroad/Stripe), basic delivery, and a landing page.
  4. Launch to one community where your audience already lives.
  5. Measure conversion and iterate.

Cautions

  • Check platform terms, copyright, and tax obligations before scaling. For tax guidance see the IRS self-employed resources: IRS Self-Employed Individuals.
  • Avoid models that depend on violating other services’ rules or on questionable content; those scale poorly and carry legal risk.

gslcjo, I don't think I can really make a living in the USA by mining of gold in World of Warcraft. But yes, there are some other ways to make money online besides web development or online marketing. However, as the world becomes 'smaller', more and more of these jobs are in demand.. especially because a small amount in the USA can be huge elsewhere in the world (i.e. China)
