We are about to add an on-line buying facility to our web and my employer has asked me to to create job descriptions for all the functions involved with marketing a web from seo, to social marketing to email campaigns.

At this stage we are try to determine what we can do in house with out current skill base and what will be out sourced. Can anyone tell what the various roles are and what tasks we should include in these job descriptions?

A compact, practical framework to turn the thread’s ideas into job descriptions and hiring decisions. The replies from and correctly separate technical work from ongoing channel work; the next step is to translate that into role ownership, measurable outcomes, and who holds the keys (in-house) versus who you hire for scale (outsource).

Start by naming roles (titles only — keep these short in the JD): Digital Marketing Lead (strategy & budget), Content/Editorial Lead (governance, calendar, quality control), Email/Lifecycle Manager (automation strategy, deliverability ownership), Social & Community Lead (audience growth, partnerships), Paid Media Specialist, Analytics & Conversion Manager (measurement, experiment roadmap), Front-end/Dev (site performance & tracking), and Marketing Ops (tools, integrations, vendor SLAs). For each job description list: primary outcome (what success looks like), top 4–6 responsibilities (day-to-day ownership), required tools/skills, and 3 concrete KPIs the hire will own (examples below).

How to decide in-house vs outsource: keep strategy, customer data/measurement, and core brand/content ownership in-house. Outsource episodic or highly-scaled needs — large creative production, specialized ad buys, complex platform migrations, or short-term spikes where an agency provides clear SLAs. Require deliverables from vendors: documented handoffs, event naming/data-layer specs, test plans, and a timeline for knowledge transfer.

Practical JD/KPI examples and a learning path: write KPIs that map to revenue and retention (conversion rate, revenue per visitor, repeat-purchase rate), include tooling the person must know (analytics platform, tag management, ESP, CMS), and require a written measurement plan as part of onboarding. If analytics training is needed, start with Google’s official courses (Analytics Academy / Skillshop) and confirm you’re on the current platform: Google Analytics 4 is now the supported product and older Universal Analytics properties required migration/export — if you have legacy UA data, export it before deletion. . .
