There is a lot of stuff in the net about affiliate programs. ShareASale and CommissionJunction are very common ones. As is Amazon and Ebay. These days, you need a good website to get approved into these affiliate networks in general.

I hired someone in-house to do this, and primarily this ended up being for SEO work. Would you also consider doing marketing in-house? I am interested in this topic also - good question.

You can use a PAD submitter software and that will upload your software to shareware sites.

Remember, even if your site is static on and off page, your competitors are changing. If some site ranks higher than you, or gets booted from the index, that can also cause fluctuation. You are not in a static situation, you are in a dynamic flow of competitors.

In general, PPC is a form of CPA - you are paying for a user interaction. You are paying some advertising company (be it Google, Yahoo, MSN, AdBrite, etc..) money each time someone clicks on your ad. The more effective your ad is (in terms of attracting clicks), the more …

Clickbank has a built-in affiliate system, does that matter or do you have an inhouse system?

If you are a Costco member in the US, I don't know anything better than Elavon. no set up fee, free AMEX, and below 2% transactions fees. You need to go through Costco business services though

I wouldn't suggest forum signatures as a way to make money. You could spend 1 hour and write an article ...

You must have some idea about the field. After that, you can decide your marketing model, and whether you will be purely online, offline, or a combination. What is the field you want to be in?

If you have an RSS feed for your site, try submitting that to some RSS feed directories.

What is the value of SEO footer links ? For example, if we sponser or distribute a wordpress theme with footer links, will it help our SEO efforts?

When you say penalty, I would say there is either de-indexing, or lowering in ranking. Sandboxing - I say sort of a "staging" area where a site goes until it has proven trustworthy. Not a penalty, but a precautionary measure.

Thinking about it, I would define it as a spin on word-of-mouth If you compare traditional marketing as a centralized system, where the brand/company spreads the message, in viral marketing, you have all these small systems (people) spreading the message. Sort of like peer-to-peer vs. central

Aaron Wall said something very useful (probably a few years ago), that the less you rely upon google for traffic, the more google will rely upon you... Very wise, and pretty difficult

I did look at LinkedIn a while ago, but it seemed they were looking for advertisers willing to spend above 20K... Have had experience with Facebook and I would guess this is something similar.

Facebook clicks are more expensive, and the CTR is a lot lower than adwords. I stopped before I got a lot of results.

I think it is just marketing. It took 15 years to go from 1.0 to 2.0 How can 3.0 appear so soon?

I am missing this completely. Are you allowing visitors to share your content on these other sites, or have you posted other content on these sites, and getting referral visits?

Facebook demographic marketing would be something that I have used, but I got a feeling the CTR is very low. It may be better converting though.

I have read, though, that Bing traffic is higher converting. I don't have a source for that, but it does not sound unreasonable.

1 million dollars would not be enough. The lifetime value of lost traffic would have to be calculated and paid. ... on the other hand, maybe that traffic would come to these sites through other means

They aren't going to eliminate the shipping right? They will have to cost the cover of real estate ownership and all that entails, along with their shipping business.

Consider also click through rate. If you have a keyword that pays a lot, but the CTR is low, it would be better to consider the payout CTR * payout rather than just payout
