Hi, I recently purchase a Vpad 7 from Amazon. I live in Venezuela and I am trying to set up a wireless data conection with the telephone company. My Vpad makes phone calls, sends sms and conects wi-fi however when I try to set up a data conection nothing happens. I contacted Viewsonic and was told that it only work with T&T and Tmobile networks. On the specs it says: Communication: Cellular Network (Frequency/band) GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 850/1900/2100, band I, II, & V, 3G and assisted GPS. Is this a hardware problem or software? I will like to thank you for any information that you can give me.

For (and others with a tablet that will call/SMS but not open a mobile-data session): common causes are configuration, carrier provisioning, radio/network mode, or vendor/firmware limits. 's prompt about whether the tablet can access the internet is the right first check; the steps below focus on isolating the problem and fixing it.

Start with the basics (non-destructive)

  • Confirm the tablet's "Mobile data" setting is ON.
  • Recreate the operator Access Point Name (APN): Settings → Wireless & networks → Mobile networks → Access Point Names → New APN. Typical fields are Name, APN, Username, Password, MCC, MNC, Authentication, and APN type. Save, select the new APN and reboot.
  • Ask the carrier to send or confirm the exact APN values and to verify that data is enabled on the SIM account.

Isolation checks

  • Put the SIM into a known-working phone to prove the SIM/carrier actually provides data. If it works in that phone, the tablet configuration or firmware is the issue.
  • Try a different carrier SIM in the tablet (prepaid tester) to see if the tablet can establish a data session with any operator.
  • In Settings → About → Status (or Mobile networks) check what network type the tablet is registered on (2G/EDGE vs 3G/UMTS). Switching Preferred network type between GSM-only and WCDMA-only can help determine band/technology mismatch.

When to suspect hardware, locking, or firmware

  • If the tablet never negotiates a data connection but accepts calls, ask the vendor about SIM locking and check for firmware/baseband updates from the manufacturer. A factory reset (after backup) can clear misconfigurations; flashing firmware should only be done with official files/support.
  • Collect model, IMEI, exact APN values used, and results of the SIM-in-phone test before contacting carrier or vendor — it speeds troubleshooting and avoids repeated steps.
