For : given a Samsung YP-U2J that powers and shows a connection but never appears in Windows XP, the issue is most often enumeration or missing drivers rather than a dead device. 's suggestion about admin rights and drivers is correct. The following checks help isolate whether Windows, the cable, or the player is at fault.

  • Try a rear motherboard USB port (not a hub or front panel). Hubs sometimes provide power but fail to enumerate devices.
  • Test the player on another PC. If it mounts there, the original PC’s USB/drivers are the problem.
  • Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) to see any removable disk without a drive letter; assign a letter if present.
  • Watch Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) while plugging the player in. Look for "Unknown device" or yellow icons under USB controllers or Other devices and try Update Driver or uninstall+rescan.
  • Reveal and remove ghost devices: in a command prompt run set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 then start devmgmt.msc, View -> Show hidden devices, and uninstall greyed-out USB/storage entries.
  • Uninstall USB Root Hubs/Host Controllers in Device Manager and reboot so Windows redetects them.
  • Consider connection mode and drivers: some players use MTP instead of mass storage; Windows XP may need MTP support (Windows Media Player 10/11) or vendor software/drivers.
  • If available, boot a Linux Live USB to see if the player mounts there; that isolates Windows driver issues.
  • Verify the cable is data-capable (some cables are charge-only).

Caution: avoid repartitioning or formatting until data is backed up. If these steps fail, vendor firmware/driver updates or official support may be required.
