Do you think pinching the white cable that attaches to the LCD screen would cause my screen to be black. Everything else works, sound etc when connected to an external monitor. Do you think replacing the LCD screen would solve this problem or could I have done something inside the laptop while replacing the palm rest?

Those could be the wires going to the backlight lamp or its power inverter. Just restoring the connection on that pinched wire would restore power to the backlight. The illumination from the backlight is the LCD's main source of brightness.
